  • Grows 2-4 feet tall with aromatic, toothed leaves that can be brewed into a sweet, anise-flavored tea or used as a culinary seasoning.

anise hyssop seeds for planting

Grow Anise Hyssop from freshly harvested Agastache foeniculum herb seeds. Anise Hyssop is a lovely herb that produces fragrant, purple flowers. The plants themselves reach a mature height of about 30 to 36 inches tall and are greatly used in the herb garden, as well as flower beds, for their gorgeous blooms. Not only will onlookers be envious of their beauty, but they will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden. Butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and ladybugs will cling to these beauties all summer long.

Grown as a perennial flowering herb, Anise Hyssop will establish a deep root system. The plants will grow fairly quickly the first season, only to wilt on the surface with the first frost. If temperatures are not extremely harsh, your Anise Hyssop plants will later return the following season from roots. Grow and enjoy this beautiful herb along driveways, walkways, borders and patios. They can even be sown by the masses in a naturalized setting, or anywhere you'd like to add some color. Anise Hyssop is also greatly used in pots & containers as well.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Anise Hyssop can be grown either indoors or directly outdoors. If started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow the seeds directly to the surface of the soil, allowing direct sunlight to reach them. This is crucial for proper germination of Anise Hyssop seeds. Transplant the entire peat pots, or direct sow in the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Anise Hyssop herbs will enjoy an area that receives full sunlight to partial shade, with temperatures of at least 65F or above. The soil should be rich, fertile and filled with organic matter. Just make sure that it is well drained as well. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting to avoid disrupting the seeds.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Your Anise Hyssop herb seeds will begin to germinate within roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 30 to 36 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. The plants display fragrant, purple flowers, atop green foliage. Anise Hyssop is known to attract an array of beneficial insects, such as butterflies, bumblebees, ladybugs and even hummingbirds as well.

Anise hyssop seeds require light to germinate. If yours fail to do so, you’ve covered them with too much medium. I use SunGro Sunshine Mix #4 for all of my seeds and gardening. Fill a grow tray with with substrate and generously water. Make sure the tray has drainage. Sprinkle seeds over surface. Lightly mist. Place in a sunny warm spot. It’s in the mint family, thus not fussy. You don’t need a dome. Keep substrate moist but not wet. I bottom water and drain excess from the catch tray after letting the planter tray soak for about 30 minutes. Transplant when seedlings have four sets of true leaves. I don’t bother to meticulously separate them. Like I said, it’s in the mint family and won’t suffer from a little crowding. It will readily reseed every year and reward you with sturdy fragrant plants, loved by pollinators. Deadhead trim by 1/3 after each bloom and you’ll be rewarded with many more. They’re really quite beautiful when in a mass planting. Water deeply when it’s hot out. Good luck!

I planted these all over my garden. I purchase a couple packets and only 2 plants sprouted and grew. It took all summer to grow. I'm in 6A and planted these mid May, its Oct 7 and they still haven't bloomed. I will not buy again and I will not recommend purchasing.

After posting a review that the seeds did not grow, I recently saw some sprouts and growth. This was after many trials and after 2 months that the seeds were planted in this area.

In 10 years I only found 1 plant for sale. With these I can grow my own. Anise Hyssop has its unique licorice flavoring, naturally sweet with a strong hint of mint as well. These plant die back but regrow every spring if taken care of.
