About this item

  • Edible Flowers - Borage Seeds produce an attractive herb that produces deep blue, star shaped blooms atop furry stems. The flowers are edible & often added to salads, deserts, tropical drinks, ice cubes and more.
  • Edible Leaves - Harvest Blue Borage leaves when they are young for best flavoring. The leaves will start getting pretty furry after they are well established.
  • Growth - Borage is grown as an annual flowering herb. It will grow to a mature height of roughly 12" to 24" tall and can easily spread 12" to 18" wide.
  • Relative Companion Plants - Borage is a great companion plant for other medicinal herbs like Feverfew, Comfrey, Turmeric, Salvia and Lovage. Sow right in the garden or start indoors together.
  • Quality - All Borage seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity - Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets - Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 5" wide by 7" tall.
  • Promise - Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination - Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness - All Borage seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!

Blue Borage, scientifically known as Borago officinalis, is an annual herb known for its striking blue, star-shaped flowers and bristly, hairy leaves. Native to the Mediterranean region, it has been naturalized in many parts of the world, often seen in gardens for both its ornamental value and its culinary uses. The plant can grow up to 2 feet tall, featuring a bushy appearance with leaves that are somewhat reminiscent of cucumber in flavor due to their high content of cucurbitacin. Borage is not only visually appealing but also attracts pollinators like bees, which is why it's sometimes called "bee bush" or "bee bread." In culinary applications, borage is valued for more than just its leaves; the flowers can be used to decorate salads, giving them a mild cucumber-like taste, while the leaves are often used in soups, stews, or as a fresh garnish. Beyond its gastronomic uses, borage has been utilized in traditional medicine for centuries. It's believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to treat fevers, coughs, and depression. The plant contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that supports skin health.

Borage is so good for my organic garden, helping to care for numerous companion plants/crops. These seeds had a very high germination rate. They popped up in just days! Google “Borage companion crops plants” to see what’re to pop some seeds in your garden!

These flower seeds are so pretty! I planted them in my back yard, just threw them about in the hopes they would take root and sprout, and they indeed have. Even though there are tons of seeds included in the pack, just a fraction have sprouted. I partially blame the method I used to plant them, but I also have not had very good luck with mail order seeds, but overall I am pretty happy these have worked at all and are not a complete dud. The price is very nice for what you get, highly worth it I think, as long as you aren't expecting them all to sprout.

These fat, clean, healthy looking seeds are Borage officinalis, non-GMO and untreated.Seed Needs of New Haven, Michigan has packed these seeds in an informative packet. Interestingly, the received packet is significantly larger than as stated in the listing and is in actuality 5” W x 7” H. The packet back has lots of easy-to-read information. Sowing, seedling care, planting, harvesting, general information, and a modern QR Code for quick reorders (plus extra info) are all covered. The packet is finished with a solid zip-top for tight closure. The successful growth of these borage seeds is covered with a 365-day warranty. Contact information is clearly stated via website and email, as well.I’m starting a few seeds today and will add a picture of those on ‘sprouting day’. Borage is so delightful in the garden, and I love the surprise of blue blossoms decorating a salad or Charcuterie Board. My previous experience with borage was from Pacific Northwest gardening. This year I am adding borage to a Midwest zone 6a garden. I enjoy it as a filler among the perennials and annuals. Usually, I do not grow borage in a dedicated herb bed, only because it seems to do better with richer soil than do my thyme, rosemary, lavender and the like. Keep in mind that borage does ‘self-sow’ and you shall have some volunteer seedlings next year. I have found that borage blooms are loved by a variety of bees and butterflies, making it a perfect companion plant in the tomato bed.Happy Gardening!
