About this item

  • Aromatic and Flavorful: Lemon Mint, or Monarda citriodora, is known for its strong lemon scent when crushed, making it a favorite for culinary uses like teas, garnishes, and flavoring in desserts, though its flavor can also evoke oregano as the plant matures.
  • Medicinal Uses: Traditionally used in treating respiratory issues like colds and coughs, Lemon Mint has thymol, which contributes to its antiseptic properties, useful in skin applications and for soothing sore throats.
  • Ecological Benefits: As a magnet for pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, it's an excellent addition to any garden aiming to support local wildlife. Its drought tolerance and preference for full sun make it adaptable to various garden conditions.
  • Cultural and Gardening Notes: Native to parts of the U.S. and Mexico, it's often used in native and pollinator gardens. Its vigorous growth habit means it can spread, so it's recommended for areas where it won't overcrowd other plants, yet its beauty and utility make it a garden standout.
  • Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.25" wide by 4.50" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.

lemon mint herb seeds for planting

Grow the attractive Lemon Mint, from freshly harvested Monarda citriodora seeds. Lemon Mint is an attractive flower, just as much as it is a fragrant herb. These plants grow to a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall, displaying beautiful lavender colored blooms along it's erect stems. The leaves are slender and green, placed underneath the clusters of lemon scented, 2 inch blooms. Lemon Mint is known to attract all sorts of beneficial insects to the garden, such as bumblebees, honeybees, butterflies and hummingbirds as well. They are a popular pick in most butterfly gardens and insectaries. The citrus flavored leaves can be minced and added to flavor teas and fruit jellies.

Lemon Mint is categorized as an annual flowering herb. Annuals will grow quickly from freshly harvested seeds, blooming through the summer months and later wilting from harsh frosts. The seeds are known to drop to the bare ground beneath, allowing fresh plants to return the following Spring season. You can also collect the seeds from dried flower heads at the end of the Autumn season, for resowing the following year.

Lemon Mint plants make a great cut flower for floral arrangements and bouquets as well, giving off their minty, lemon scent. Simply cut the tops, allowing the base of the plant to regrow. This can also help establish and promote new plant life from your Lemon Mint plants.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Lemon Balm can be grown indoors or directly outdoors. If started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1/16” under topsoil so that direct light can reach them. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when the weather is warm & all danger of frost passes. Check below for spacing and growth habits.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Lemon Balm will enjoy an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day, with temperatures of at least 65F or more. The soil should be rich in organic matter, but also well drained. To improve drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily with a mist setting or other light water setting to avoid overwatering the seeds.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Lemon Mint seeds will typically germinate within 14 to 28 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of around 12 to 24 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Lemon Mint will produce gorgeous, 2 inch, lavender colored flowers that will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as bumblebees, honeybees, hummingbirds & butterflies.

What I got is very not lemon mint but I added a few extra stars because it did grow well and the humming birds enjoyed whatever the plant I got was.
