Great kit other than the shift cable core itself. Could not get it installed - would not feed through the shift cable jacket. I ended up reusing the old cable, which easily slid into the new jacket. Also, the shift cable bellows was VERY difficult to get started on the shift cable jacket. Used all different types of lube and a deep well socket to get installed. Took me at least 2 hrs of struggling to get it on. Iām not sure if this is my fault or if an OEM shift cable bellows would go on easier.

Boat is 1991 Sea Ray 185BR Mercruiser 4.3LX Alpha One Gen 2. The problem was deteriorated bellows but shifting was okay. This kit is okay but there was an issue, The exhaust and U-Joint bellows, water hose, gaskets, etc worked fine. The shift bellows worked good but the shift cable assembly had problems in this boat. Evidently the geometry for shift cable routing involves a small radius bend immediately inside the transom. Per the excellent SEI video on Utube, the inner core of the cable is supposed to smoothly slide into the outer cable sheath up to the engine. Despite hours of attempts at smoothing the routing and making bends slightly larger it would never insert past the first bend. However the old OEM inner core would slide in nicely. I used it inside the new cable outer sheath. I would recommend buying the SEI kit without the shift cable for this boat. Then buy the OEM Mercruiser shift cable kit for obviously more money. This is a really difficult job for the average DIYer. Flat rate manual shows about 10 hours for a marine mechanic with knowledge, tools, hoist, and experience. I have plenty of mechanic hand tools and considerable experience with autos. I had the Clymer 5th edition 1997 Mercruiser manual. I still had to buy the hinge pin tool; the shift cable extra long, thin, deep well socket; and the UJ bellows seal expander tool. I chose not to replace the gimbal bearing since it was smooth and replacement might require yet another another special alignment tool.Several of the Utube videos have a assembly order error for the bell housing reassembly. DO NOT install the hinge pins before the exhaust and UJ bellows are seated. Push the bell housing forward inside the gimbal housing past the holes and secure with bungee cords. This puts the bellows in compression and they naturally push up on the seating surfaces. Then put the hinge pins in place carefully. These are large diameter, fine pitch threads into aluminum. Very easy to cross thread and ruin a $500 bell housing.
