I do most of my videos with a Canon Vixia 50 and some with my Olympus SP 590. I was disappointed that the foot of the mic mount was too large to mount to my Canon as the Canon has a small shoe. But the cord input fit fine. So I recruited a "mic holder" volunteer. Then I borrowed a Nikon DSLR from an associate and videoed with the mic sitting in the shoe properly. Because I wanted a broad test, I then attached my Olympus to an accessory handle that had a full size shoe which the mic fit fine. Results: Canon's internal mic outperformed the SVM10 in quality and clarity but you would expect that given the prices! The Nikon ( always a top-quality brand) was a bit easier to use with the mic sitting on the camera but, still, Nikon outperformed the SVM 10. We videoed in an Aquarium Gallery in a museum and the 10 seemed to reduce the background noise of pumps and filters in the huge tanks. That was a "plus" feature! Nikon picked up everything! Then my favorite camera, my Olympus. The mic fit the attachment shoe perfectly BUUT, the cable connection to the camera was entirely different so that was a no-go. All in all, the mic is just under 13 bucks and sound quality was a bit thin and fuzzy. Depending on one's level of desired quality, it might be a bargain. It might be a wiser decision, however, to save up a bit more cash and get a higher quality mic or, in many cases, continue to use the internal one that came with the camera!

This mic comes nicely packaged in the included hard case. The mic itself has a nice quality feel to it due to its aluminum body. Performance however is not as good as my older Nikon dslr onboard mic. Let’s just put it this way, the camera cost several hundred or thousands, a $13 mic is not going to do better than the mic built into the camera. If you want better performance in a mic, you’ll have to spend the money on it. Cheaper cameras may benefit from this mic, and in that case, this would be a good deal. If you have a high end camera however, just use the onboard mic, or spend the money on a proper mic for that expensive piece of equipment.

It’s a very poor mic. Low sensitivity, strange pickup pattern and surprisingly high handling noise. Creates hissy recordings because the recorder/camera’s gain has to be cranked up all the way up. Maybe it could work with very loud sound sources, such as at music venues, sports arenas, etc. but it is otherwise unusable for general audio recording.

First of all, there's one huge mistake in the listing. This uses 2 AAA sized batteries (rechargeable or alkaline) and NOT a 9V alkaline battery, as noted in the description. This was purchased with a very specific purpose in my case... as an ambient mic replacement for DSLR/Mirrorless cameras. The built-in mics offer no wind noise filtering, so at the very least, I wanted a stereo alternative to plug in and provide some way to reduce the annoying whooshing noise they can produce with the slightest breeze. This mic will go a long way to take care of that, but it introduces a whole new problem that's directly related to other types of noise. This uses 2 mono microphones facing in opposite directions to create an almost 180 degree stereo pair, and not the 90 or 120 degrees you'd expect them to be. The mics inside are omnidirectional on their own, and have absolutely no 'pattern' to restrict or funnel sound into them, which means that they are overly sensitive to everything in any direction they can access, and will happily amplify it when you're recording. Bump something into your tripod leg to make it clink, and it will sound like you just kicked a can when you listen to your playback. Having the mic suspended in a shock mount doesn't matter when the noise is perfectly audible to your ears. If you hear it, so will the mic - and it will double or triple the volume as it records it, since it's an amplified mic. The closer to the mic the sound is, the more pronounced it will be when compared to everything else it records. It does serve a purpose, and I won't use it for recording music or voices, or specific sounds that I want to isolate and include. It reduces wind noise enough that it can work for me in this one, limited way... and it doesn't sound bad as a background sound collector that colors the sound to be tinny sounding or muffled or distorted. I certainly would not count on this to be noise-free for general use, but it's a cheap place to start for an external mic that will eventually get replaced. The case, dead cat, and bag are nice touches, and will likely get reused with whatever I'll get later on.

I have had this microphone for a few weeks now and have tested it in various situations. It delivers great stereo and it is much better than the mic I was using. It has very little self noise and provides nice, clean, audio. The gain on the mic is a bit low but that is easily adjusted in post. It works perfectly on my DSLR and my camcorder. Having the hard case is a real bonus so the microphone is well protected when not on my camera. I like this microphone very much. It is now the mic I use on my video camera. Great buy.
