Comparison

1

Other Imports

Other imports use a coil spring for tension. The coil spring arcs under oad binding on the fixture hole. As the coil loads and unloads it causes the movement to feel gritty due to coil bind and makes setting the indicator difficult and unpredictable.

1

Shars

New re-positioned spring stays linear throughout the travel eliminating spring bind. Adjustment screw uses a finer thread and ball shape at the end of the threads that sits in a pocket eliminating the screw from walking. This design gives the fine adjustment screw a positive footing, a more predictable adjustment and a silky smooth feel. The improvements minimize erratic dial hand movements and makes dialing in effortless, saving precious setup time.

I bought this more or less by mistake. I did want the magnetic holder but accidentally ordered the one with an indicator too. It happens when doing way too many comparisons that take you beyond your natural attention span!In any case, the parts arrived earlier than expected. It was bought to hold a Mitutoyo test indicator that I purchased recently. The bad points:1) The hole size did not open enough to hold the Mitutoyo holding pin or the cheap test indicator I had previously. I had to use an end mill to open the hole up. No big deal but not something you expect to need to do to new equipment.2) The roughness of the mating surfaces that do the holding. I had to pull the unit apart and polish the surfaces. I only did the main assembly where the main knob is. There are two surfaces that were very rough which caused the unit to "grind" as being tightened. If I didn't tighten enough they would slip as they fell into a groove. Tightening enough to hold properly made it fell like the unit was going to break. After polishing two surfaces, the difference was amazing. Far smoother and more positive engagement. The more you turn, the harder it held. One day I'll pull it all apart and do the same to every surface but for now this works for me.3) It is aluminum for the arms that are anodized a nice red color. However that means it will wear faster, and, it also flexes more. I can see the flex in the aluminum when loading it up a little by hand. For the sort of work I do, the test indicator will not produce significant deflection. Your mileage in different applications may vary. Par particular note if you are using log travel dial indicators that have a reasonably firm spring. It may be enough to throw it off beyond the resolution of the indicator. The good:1) The fine adjust. Beyond good. It would be worth buying the Noga and this just to do a parts swap! It is that good. No vibration, smooth and steady. Within a few minutes I could set it at any point of choice on the Mitutoya test indicator (20-0-20) right on the line. In my case my fingers preloaded the system a couple of thou, so I stopped a couple of thou short and when I released my fingers it popped right on. Easy to do as the needle had perfect tracking with the knob, no bounce at all.2) The magnetic base. The base was ground to a high degree. I checked it on my surface plate and there was nothing to do. When placed on a solid flat chunk of metal, I could not remove it by hand. Naturally, thinner metal and/or non flat surfaces will degrade that performance. This is physics however so there is not much that can be done about it, just understand the limitations of the tool.3) Bumping the holder gave a temporary needle swing but it came back to the same point. My last holder failed completely here. If I bumped the table it would sometimes lose the zero. Not this unit. It is sturdy enough to not lose its place.4) The holding friction. When dialed up, this thing would not budge. I could put several pounds on the arms and it would stay firm. The spring is also quite strong so can support heavier instruments without worrying it will let go. Confidence in your tools is something everyone should have. My previous unit had inspired fear that it will ruin an expensive instrument, rather than confidence in its ability. If you are willing to spend a very small amount of time for fine touch ups, this is a bargain for the home shop or even workshop. I'd like the arms to be steel, but at this price and performance, I can live with it without regret.
