I use this to release deep water perch caught in Lake Michigan. It works really well. I have it attached to a 16 ounce weight on a short fishing rod. Small perch are quickly returned to depth minimizing barotrauma.

I'm using this on small crappie so only added 1/2 oz weight which worked great. Hook them in the lip, open your bail and it takes them right down. Quick yank on the rod and they are off, telling their buddies how they escaped.

In my area north east Florida you have to have one of these on your vessel even if you typically use a vent tool. Product works well, materials seem good I think this should last year's on the boat.

Tried it in the gulf on a Red Snapper. it worked the first time! I used the recommended bungee cord to attach the weight. it seems fragile, but is al about leverage and the fact the fish is not putting a fight when returned to the water column

The two common descending device designs are hook or lip grabber.I prefer the hook as the fish can get off the device easily if it is in danger from predators and at a depth where it has recovered sufficiently. The lip grabber style also can do substancial damage to the jaw and cheeks of the fish as shown in the alaska video.Although very thin wire the Shelton is springy and functional. Seems lightweight for use on bigger fish but ticks most boxes.
