OK, it's a sponge in a scrap of fabric in a silver cup. It's super simple and anyone could make one of these. EXCEPT for this all fits perfectly. The sponge is the right size, the fabric is the right size, and it all fits in this little stainless steel cup. They saved me so much time and effort it's worth paying for this. My family loves when I make crêpes. I have a fancy crêpe maker that I absolutely love. This little gizmo works so much better than anything else I've improvised. There is a lot to be said about the right tool for the job. I have no idea what else people would use this for but if you have an application and think this tool may improve your life, get one. It's little.

So yes, this is weird. It's a piece of burlap over a sponge in a tin. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to put the burlap in the wash or not, but I anticipate after several more months of use, the oil residue will have seeped into the sponge enough that I can't get it out, and soon, it'll start to smell like bad olive oil. That's what I've used this for, to spread the oil around the bottom of the pizza crust, and for that, it works really really good. Much better than a brush or spatula. The downside is the amount it absorbs, so I use a lot more oil than I typically would, but I'm still working on getting the right touch with how hard to push and how light to spread the oil.
