I have a few ESP32s and I've used those with WLED before. I don't think this is a much better solution. You still need to provide an adequate power supply and wire it up, so if you have no DIY experience, this is probably going to be frustrating (and you should get an all-in-one solution) whereas if you DO have DIY experience, you're better off setting up an ESP32/8266.With this, you have to use the app to change to settings, there is no remote. It will only control up to 960 LEDs. The music function doesn't work very well in my opinion. The app is sort of confusing to navigate because they use icons for most labels instead of, well, text, but it's relatively intuitive at least. At the end of the day, this just doesn't offer enough in terms of ease of use or functionality to make it worth it over getting three ESP32s instead.

The SP105e connects easily to both power (I tested it with both 5v and 12v) and LEDs (I tested with a 5v and 12v string of ws2811-type LEDs). I connected the included JST-SM connector to the Gnd, Dat, and Vcc terminals (I didn't need the Clk terminal), attached it to the string of ws2811 LEDs, and connected the power supply's barrel connector to the other side (it also has screw terminals available).Unlike many generic controllers for ws2811-type LEDs, THIS one has a proper Android app you can download from Google Play (as opposed to an unsigned binary available only from a random website in China, or some anonymous Google Drive, that could do literally ANYTHING once you've swatted away Android's stern security warnings). That alone makes the SP105e a lot more desirable than many of its competitors.The controller has hundreds of patters, including many that are actually ATTRACTIVE... including patterns that involve relatively subtle changes, pastel hues, and generally do more than assault you with seizure-inducing attacks of red, green, and blue (the way most department-store RGB LEDs do).If you're technically inclined, you can also write your own control software using an ESP32, connect to the SP105E via bluetooth, and implement your own unique effects.This controller is definitely indoor-only. If you want to control outdoor lights, you'll really need a controller that's explicitly designed for it.If you don't already have one or more strings of LEDs to use with it, I recommend going with 12v instead of 5v strings. They're MUCH easier to work with. With 5v, powering more than a single 20-foot string of 50 LEDs often requires getting... creative... with your power wiring due to voltage drop. Like, feeding every 20-foot/50-LED string's power in parallel, while keeping the data wires connected in series. With 12v, you can generally connect up to 5 or 6 50-LED strings end to end without drama.

This product does work as described and will control a standard WS281x strip of lights — in my test, operating at 24 volts.But folks, I'm writing this in December 2024, and if you're playing with addressable LEDs with a controller which isn't WLED compatible, you're going to be disappointed. For years, the scourge of most preassembled LED products have been the horrible controllers, with their proprietary horrible, horrible apps. This controller requires yet another proprietary app, which is even more horrible than most.Today, WLED has become an open-source de-facto standard app/protocol for controlling addressable LED arrays. If you're looking to do anything creative with your LEDs, you want a controller which is WLED compatible.If not — for example, if you just want to set your addressable LEDs to a single color — you could use this controller and its horrible, horrible app. Otherwise, I would not recommend it. The current Amazon price of $14 (with coupon) seems excessive when compared to WLED compatible controllers.

These dont last. I got about 3mos out of three of these before i moved on. Junk. The bluetooth module fails.

This LED controller found its way into my workshop as a method to test/control WS2812B/WS2811 LED strips. Ultimately I'll be building an Arduino-based controller but wanted a cheap way to test & evaluate various individually-addressable LED strip options. And it has delivered! Lots of adjustability and cool patterns and I haven't found a glitch yet when used with my Android device. My kid has enjoyed playing with the patterns and colors as well!
