A non-contact voltage tester serves as a key component in any electrical toolkit, allowing the user to verify the presence of AC voltage prior to working on an electrical installation or during troubleshooting without requiring physical contact with live electrical conductors. Engineered to specifications required by professional electricians the Sperry Instruments VD6509 Adjustable Non-Contact Voltage Detector allows for sensitivity adjustments in multiple-wire applications when precision and safety are crucial. This unit features an adjustable sensitivity dial able to detect the presence of AC Voltage from as low as 12 V to up to 1000 V AC and provides both audible (beeping) and visual (360 degree flashing red light) indicators to alert the user of the presence of voltage. It also includes a built-in flashlight. The fully insulated probe tip eliminates the risk of contacting live electrical wires while the patented battery check feature designed into the unit ensures tester and batteries are operating properly, virtually eliminating false negative readings. This unit features 250lb crush-rated impact resistant ABS housing to withstand tough worksite applications while the design ensures a positive user experience over long hours of repeated use. Applications include testing doorbells, low voltage lighting, security system wires, AC energized wires, quickly locating hot terminals in receptacles, pinpointing breaks in wires and detecting the absence/presence of voltage at outlets, circuit breaker panels, light fixtures, switches, and motors. The unit includes a pocket-clip for secure portability. Tester is cETLus Listed, CE Certified, CAT III 1000V/IV 600V rated, and includes a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Operates from a single AAA battery (included). Frequency: 50-60Hz.

you can adjust the sensitivity from it will find voltage from 1ft away to you can tell which of the two wires in the box are the hot one (and it isn't always the black one as it should be)... That is what makes this a great detector. Also the battery is straight forward to change, no secret push and twist and hope.

I own an older Sperry adjustable NCVT I purchased many years ago from Home Depot and love it, however, this newer model failed miserably! I bet the older one was made in USA.THE NEW MODEL FROM AMAZON WOULDN'T INDICATE LIVE VOLTAGE UNLESS TOUCHING THE WIRE POSITIONED EXACTLY ON THE WIRE AND ONLY ON THE BARELY WORKING SIDE OF THE TIP. OTHERWISE IT WOULD NOT GIVE A LIVE READING IN ONE OUT OF 7 TRIES! THAT IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS AND DANGEROUS! This is why you are ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO TEST A KNOWN LIVE WIRE BEFORE RELYING ON IT.Bing an electrician, I wanted to purchase another as a backupso I purchased this one from Amazon and was totally disappointed. My old Sperry tester from Home Depot is 10-15 years old and could sense voltage from 3ft away on the highest setting and be turned down to sense voltage on an individual wire and has been 100% reliable. Unfortunately the design and quality has changed and HD no longer sells Sperry. The new tester feels lighter and cheaper and of course didn't work. It was so disappointing I was actually even more irritated they even made me return it for the hassle and price. It will never be tested for quality improvement.Wanting another, and seeing they offer two models, I may try them again but after a few weeks I am still too disgruntled to even try.

The Sensitivity control functions the opposite of the norm with full CCW being maximum and CW being minimum. I would call this a major design flaw.

Being able to set the sensitivity is essential. With low sensitivity setting, it can isolate a specific wire within 1/4" when there are many live wires close together. Sometimes I need to test wiring that's out of reach on the rafters, then I set sensitivity high and can detect voltage 3 ft away.

My only complaint is the soft touch on/off switch it gets pressed too easily by other tools in my electrical bag.

I'm not getting too technical but when I'm at work I need to know if there's power to my heat tape extension cords that are keeping many pipes from freezing in the harsh New England weather, this thing is great. All I have to do is turn it on and get it close and bingo. Very happy with this for my job.

Works well but hard to have a default go-to mode. Should ideally have one base mode and then the second fine tune feature. If the small adjustment wheel (black marking on black wheel) aren’t in the same spot every time you’ll get mixed readings. I will hang onto this but again, will most likely see a dab of superglue to set it in a desireable range. Can go 0-100% sensitivity + more on 1/2” of rotation.

This voltage sensor has adjustable sensitivity. It is difficult to determine the correct sensitivity level.

This will not (at least as far as I can tell) give you readings about the amount of current flowing in a wire or if the wire is hot or return, but it will let you know if there is current in a wire. You can adjust the sensitivity, but it will register a USB cord that charging a phone, so it has no problem telling you that the switch or wall plug you're about to work on still has current going to it.I've been replacing a lot of switches and duplexes in my house with smart versions, and this kept me from getting shocked once when I found out that my assumption that two switches a few feet apart weren't on the same circuit. It's a good practice to always double-check before working with electricity, even if you're sure you flipped the right breaker. This is a good, inexpensive tool that will let you know if it's safe to continue.

I have tried several others before ( including some from this manufacturer). This (the VD6509 adjustable with flashlight) is by far the best one yet. Delivers on all fronts - whether adjusted for high sensitivity or low. It also helps to have the built-in flashlight. No false positives, no hype-sensitivity, no fuss no moss.I hurried up and got two more as spares ( for the cottage, house ...etc).
