I was shopping the used market on a well known site thinking I had to have a Starrett or Mitutoyo to get good quality. But I've always heard SPI made good stuff and their drill chucks are talked about favorably on machinists' forums so I took a chance on this hoping it would at least be useable. For the price I was expecting a lot of plastic parts, but to my surprise the only plastic on the entire thing is the large adjustment knob (which is thermoplastic and just fine)....everything else is metal and well made. Glad I rolled the dice, and for the cost there isn't a better base out there. It holds my dial indicator rock solid, is easy to adjust (even has a fine adjustment on it), and far exceeded my expectations. Trust me when I say you don't need to spend four times this amount to get a high quality mag base.
