The sensor is a non-shielded, NPN Normally Open (NO) sensor designed for metal detection within a 5mm range. Operating on 10-30V DC with a 200mA output, it is widely used in industrial automation, robotics, and CNC applications. The square, non-shielded design allows for flexible mounting and a slightly greater detection range than shielded models, though it may be more susceptible to interference in high-metal environments. The three-wire configuration (Brown = Power, Blue = Ground, Black = Output) ensures easy controller integration, but users must confirm their system is compatible with NPN NO logic. While it delivers reliable and cost-effective performance, those needing a shielded sensor for more precise detection or a longer sensing range may want to explore alternatives or cylindrical inductive sensors.I mentor a group of young students in a robotics club, where they learn about various facets of robotics, including how to position stepper motors and input coordinate points. To help them explore sensor technology, I purchased several styles of proximity sensors that provide the necessary physical fit, electrical feedback, and repeatable accuracy for their designs. Each type of sensor demonstrates unique applications, encouraging the students to think creatively about incorporating them into their projects. The mechanical teams handle sensor placement, while the programming teams figure out how to use these sensors as open/closed limiters to guide the stepper motors. Through this process, the students broaden their skill sets and discover new ways to solve engineering challenges.I admit I’m biased, but these kids are genuinely brilliant. I’m thrilled to introduce them to new methods for achieving their goals, and it’s gratifying to see them succeed. They’ve even brought home a few blue ribbons from competitions, and they all take pride in sharing those successes.
