This bench works and does what it should. Over the several years I have had it, however, it has become a bit wobbly when at a certain height, and the butts of myself and all of my students have worn the cushioning down. There are also some parts that seem to be a little cheaper than the rest. The bench is fine, but if I could do it again, I'd probably pick a different one.

Some metal parts were bent when I open the package, and considered sending it back, but we were able to bend them into position for assembling. I like that the bench can be raised to a greater height than my other artist bench, however, it does seem to get a bit wobbly in the forward and backward direction the higher you go. The base feet just aren't long enough to really support it I suppose. For example when a student sits on the front part of the bench and keeps feet on the floor for good posture, the bench easily tips forward, causing a rocking action that they seem to like (!). However, the bench is on a carpet, and perhaps it wouldn't happen if it were on a hardwood floor. Adults don't seem to enjoy the rocking motion, so no problems with them. Needs quite a bit of weight to be able to adjust hydraulic levers and most young students don't weigh enough. But it doesn't squeak, the way some people have complained about theirs.
Sincerely Yours

Assembly was easy, but hub did help a lot. The hydraulics are working perfectly, which i will unlikely to adjust once I find the right height for me. I have shorter torso and hence to make sure I am playing without muscle strains, I needed taller bench, which after much research, this kind of chair was exact;y what I needed. Already noticing this bench is helping with playing, as my arms are leveled correctly to the keys. This is very similar bench to one I use in piano practice, and I am super happy. Worth the little expense, and looks great.

Received the product defective. If the hydraulics aren't lined up upon arrival, you're screwed. Good luck getting the bench disassembled (harder than assembling it). One of the legs and hydraulic sections was crooked and wouldn't lock so the moment you sit on the bench you tip to one side. Even at its lowest height the bench tips to one side. I'm super disappointed and won't be buying another one. I am, however, feeling thankful for refunds. I was taking a bigger risk, as a Canadian, in having to pay more (exchange rate, shipping costs) and it turned into such a rigamarole. Amazon Customer Service has been helpful. I wish it had been in proper condition, as I like the weight of it and the ease of adjusting the height (that's why I chose this over an artist's bench which requires many rotations of a knob to adjust height). But I'm not taking the risk again. In the pictures you can see the bench at its lowest point, not lined up. The problem's not just that it's crooked, but that one side always moves and never stays locked in place.

I had asked if this bench creaked. Tonight it was assembled by an expert who not only moves pianos but has assembled these hydraulics. I weigh about 110 pounds.. am trim etc. and do a lot of recording for you tube. I thought replacing a wooden bench with this hydraulic would eliminate a squeaking noise but it didn't. A player naturally leans from side to side in the act of playing especially when covering passages at either extreme of the instrument. I can say with certainty that if you do not sit absolutely still, that this Stagg will creak and the noise will be picked up on a recording. So I can't give it a high rating as a practical alternative to a wooden bench if a buyer does recording as I do. My opinion was confirmed by two other pianists of whom I have respect, that's why I put the question out to ascertain other opinions, which I appreciated. Finally, I can recommend as an alternative to this Stagg, a Keyboard bench which I also purchased on Amazon-It has absolutely no squeaks and is very stable and steady. It's theOn Stage KT7800 Plus Padded Keyboard Bench to which I give a FIVE STAR rating. By the way I am putting up a you tube video later this evening, that will demonstrate the weaknesses of the Stagg. I don't want my recording colleagues to buy something that has noise issues and they need to be made aware of the problems. See video documenting noises: http://youtu.be/Z8Z4ipQL9cw

My piano has always been too high for the bench that came with it and for years I have considered replacing it with an adjustable stool. Good wooden piano stools are very expensive however, and the inexpensive one we bought broke the first time someone sat on the edge of the seat.I saw this bench recently in the local music store and loved it, but they wanted $250 for it. Imagine my delight to discover it on Amazon for half the price. Delivery was super fast--I ordered Monday and received it Wednesday. I put it together myself in about 15 minutes with the tools that come in the box and now my young pianist can sit at the correct height finally. The bench is sturdy, comfortable, easy to adjust up or down, and looks great! No more stacks of books on my bench.UPDATE: After a few years of use the spot welds attaching the bench to the lift broke. I was able to get a friend who knew welding to re-weld it and now it is better than ever.
