This bread slicer gets the job done for my homemade bread loaves! The adjustable thickness settings are handy, letting me cut slices as thin or thick as I want, and it handles wider loaves up to 11.7 inches with ease. The crumb tray is a nice touch, keeping my counter mostly mess-free—though a few crumbs still escape, sneaky devils. It’s sturdy and folds up nicely for storage. Not perfect, but it does what it promises, making even cuts for bread and meats. Pretty good for the price!

I like that this can be folded for easier storage, but I wish the entire base was metal instead of only having tiny strips of metal. I worry about cutting into the plastic eventually. There's visible globs of glue on the two inner most metal strips which is disappointing. I do like how easy it is to adjust for all different sizes of bread and I recommend getting a long serrated knife.

I baked a loaf of English Muffin Bread in my bread maker, then set up this guide to cut it (once it cooled). It was easy to set up. The metal prongs are crooked, but the instructions expect that and say to straighten by hand, which I did. I pulled out my handy bread knife which is large enough to cut through bread machine baked bread, and all of a sudden it wasn't long enough, by a couple of inches. It would not stay in between the guides through the sawing motion. I also cringed when I heard the knife grinding on the bottom steel rungs, so I stopped trying to cut all the way through. Even with that, for the first time ever, I managed to get uniform slices of bread cut by hand - but I'm not sure it's worth it. Maybe I'll drag this out of the closet when I have a group over and need more than two slices, after I buy a longer knife.

Pro: Very sturdy, probably made for professional bakers. Allows very thin slices...almost like a cracker. So, the functionality is solid. This is great because gluten free bread is so dense that 1oz is actually cracker thin. It's easy to gain weight on a gluten free diet.Con: It's heavy and takes up more space than expected. Although the base folds in half, the bars and plastic sides don't fit inside the folded base, which I expected it to do based on the photos. It does come with a bag so you can keep all the parts together easily. However, I only slice one piece at a time and I want it fast. I find that between the heaviness and assembly required for each slice, it doesn't make sense for me. But it would make sense for a professional kitchen or larger family.

This bread slicer was really easy to put together and just as easy to use. The quality of the stainless steel cutting guide part is really strong and durable. The quality of the steel on the crumb tray does not seem quite as good. The little strips have slices and dents all over them from just one use. It still works much better than trying to cut homemade bread with nothing but a knife and cutting board. I like that i can get unified slices and thin enough slices to make a better sandwich. I wish there was a little less plastic used throughout the design, but all in all this is a pretty great bread slicer.

This guide does allow you to get even slices, however I think it could be improved. First for the price, at $45.99 list with a current discount to $39.99, there are other similar items that include a knife. I have a decent knife, but we had a sourdough loaf that spread and became quite wide. I first tried to cut it flat, and this holder was wide enough, but my knife was not long enough, so I ended up standing the loaf on its side to cut it. Even on the round loaf I couldn't use the kine and the holder, except to score the top to create marks to guide my starts. This is just a casualty of the design. With a loaf that is wider than your niece is long you can adjust the angle and work from one side across to the other. Since the bars extend up on both sides, you aren't able to complete this action, meaning you need to have a knife that is and least 2-3" longer than the widest loaf you'll make.I also question the metal for the bottom surface that the knife would come into contact with. So I'm concerned about dulling the edges.I am trying to temper my disappointment and see some positive points. It holds fairly compactly, but I think the design could be tweaked to allow the sides clear pieces to nest into one another and eliminate the need for a storage bag that can be burdensome for storage if trying to stack with other items.I am sure there is a good use for this, and maybe it will be better for smaller loafs than our sourdough.

Over the years of making bread, I hate slicing it the most. I have tried a meat slicer (horrible to clean up) and hand slicing (non-uniform slices). Once, I even tried looking for a used commercial bread slicer (to no avail). Suffice it to say that I hated slicing as much as I enjoy making bread. This device is manual (no electricity required) and compact, yet it works like a charm. I get uniform slices that look like they came from a commercial slicer. The way it works is with adjustable guides. On the side you want to slice, there are stainless steel guides. This is where you slice. On the other end are plastic guides to keep the loaf in place. To set it up, just put your loaf on the fold-out tray, place the cutting guides next to the loaf on either side, and then put the plastic guides on the ends, again next to the loaf. The loaf is then surrounded by guides, and will not move around when you slice. Then you pick your thickness and start cutting through the stainless guides. For best results, you will need a long, serrated bread knife (not included). You can achieve uniform-sized slices (just as thick or thin as you want) without effort. Crumbs are captured in the tray, so cleanup is a breeze. When you are finished, the tray folds, and everything fits into a nice, handy cloth bag for storage (included). I don't know what engineering genius thought up this system, but it works for me and has rekindled my enthusiasm for making rustic breads.
