The loose rings discourage fixing and leaning on the forehand. The single joint applies a nut cracker action which applies pressure to the tongue, the bars of the mouth and the horse's palate.

Bought this quite a while ago. Wonderful bit, I'd probably buy it again. If you are looking for a bit for a horse that needs a lightweight and gentle bit, this is perfect.
