thick, sturdy plastic. the handles are very smooth. the edges of the side cut outs cut bits off my sponge when I was washing the laundry basket.

Like it fine as it is sturdy enough on your hip when you care it. But was disappointed a bit by the small size. Guess it just forces more laundry.
