Excellent carry compass! Kind of expensive but the best I've found for convenience! I've used them a long time.

Like David M. Gallagher's experience, this compass is facing 180 degrees off. I purchased 3 of them for my kids for hiking. Now the first time I am using mine (4 years later), I find that it is showing South (180 degrees) for North. Now I have to have them all pull their kits and test each one. I am not happy with the fact that there is nothing I can do except buy another one and take my chances on the odds.

It's very important to note that - the white bezel will not 'spin freely' if you use the small round black elastic band that held the neck string together by placing it underneath around the bezel, then it will stay where you turn it to. That's what it's for, apparently some people don't realize it's not part of the packaging, it's part of the compass. I really like this handy little compass alot, so when I'm not wearing it, I'm keeping it in it's partially pried open package with the much needed instructions on the back, with my maps, protected from loss or damage.

Update: so after searching unsuccessfully for an alternate in the same weight class as this mini compass I decided to try my luck and buy another one. As you can see in the second photo with the iPhone compass the new one is directionally correct. I’m upgrading to 4 stars. This is the lightest compass I could find and I can now recommend this for those seeking an ultralight compass for a backup or general route finding.I suggest verifying the directional correctness before opening the package upon receipt. Don’t wait 4 years 🙂Original review:I bought this compass 4 years ago because it’s small and lightweight. Intended use is as a back up to my GPS and watch compass. I never needed to use it until today. I could tell from landmarks I should be heading north and this thing says I’m heading south… you had one job. Negative stars not an option. See photo with watch compass… this compass is off 180 degrees!Obvious Quality Control problem.

NOT A TOY! Small sized is everything when packing for outings. As a trained map reader I really appreciate the small size and actual functionality of this compass. Quality built, complete with rotating direction dial, clear see through base, and distance rulers on both sides of the clear base. SUN a trusted name in the direction business has manufacturered compass at about 1/4 the size of my old Boy Scout Compass.

A little while back I decided to up my navigation skills. I learned about how to use a compass and take bearings, and properly use a map. It quickly become apparent that the tiny button compass I carried was lacking a lot of capabilities. This compass is small enough that it is easy to carry all the time. It has a plate on it that allows you to measure distance, and use it to find bearings on a map as well has use it to more precisely note a location. This will come in handy using city maps in Europe allowing me to avoid using data, and quickly orient myself when I get off a subway.

Easy to use and very accurate for it's size and cost. Even glows when exposed to light briefly. Applications? Think hunter pin in coat or shirt if you lose your pack down that cliff ( remember two is one...) or perfect for a survival / bug out bag. Effective as a key chain addition for EDC on a length of paracord. How about tied on the sheath of your knife? Or tied into the laces of your boots. What is better then most tiny compasses is the functional plate to guage direction and the rotation of the outer ring makes this a true orientation compass. Yes it is small and if your vision is lacking you may need glasses. If you view my pic it will reveal a red guide line on the base plate and tiny dots of colors for N,S,E,W that I did with t-shirt marker. Makes for quick orientation of N,S,E,W. The red line helps to point out the intended direction of travel. So the last question is it reliable? That remains to be seen. Check back in at 6 months and a year. I will update then.Ah! One last thing. Any compass can reverse North and South. If so it's due to a strong magnetic field and you can easily fix it. Just use a rare earth magnet, line up on North and slide it straight across the compass face to South. If done properly it will now point properly. Know the science. Wink!5/16/2022. Takes a licking and keeps on working. So is it reliable? YES!

This compass works good and it is nice that it comes with a string so that you could wear it around your neck.I was surprised at how small this compass is (about 1x2 inches total size). The picture on Amazon makes it look a lot bigger when it is really very tiny.

Much smaller than expected, I overlooked the product dimensions.Comparable to a small matchbox, but much thinner obviously. Handy little compass for any excursion and it seems to work just fine!
