The TeraFlex Heavy Duty Adjustable Tire Carrier spreads the load and weight of the tire to more than just one hinge point. Incorporating and using the factory tailgate hinge mounting points spread and separate the load as far apart as possible, resulting in maximum strength and durability. Dedicated tooling provides a cast A356.2 T6 Aluminum main component. This keeps the carrier as light, and strong as possible. The fit and finish is designed to follow the flow and contour of the Jeep body, while seamlessly providing additional mounting points for off road accessories such as recovery jack and fluid containers. The factory Jeep tub provides substantial internal gussets and bracing that easily supports the new tire carrier and oversized tire. The HD hinge brackets are forged steel and the HD 5/8" hinge pins are constructed from cold formed high-carbon hardened steel. The combination of mounting location and HD mounting brackets provides one of the strongest, rattle-free tire carriers on the market today. The TeraFlex HD tire carrier removes all stress from the gate by utilizing the HD reinforcement carrier as the load-carrying component, in effect it carries the weight of the tailgate assembly and the spare tire.

I would give the product five stars for sturdiness but when it came time to needing my spare tire I couldn’t get it off! Super inconvenient to be stranded in the middle of nowhere just because a flaw in the design. One of the studs twisted out and I could not get the tire off because the stud just spun in the hole! The studs need welded in place!!! They are just pressed in and they can and will spin out

It would be 5 stars. But still feels a bit too expensive. That said, the install in straight forward with good instructions provided. And can be done with hand tools. The quality is top notch. The provided Teraflex emblem can be mounted anywhere. Teraflex fell short though when it comes to combining it's products. My previously purchased Teraflex CB Antenna spare tire mount is no longer usable. Also, My Garvin Rotopax mount is also not usable. This one isn't on Teraflex though. But the CB mount is. I had to buy the accessory mount (another $85) and more rotopax mounts and a 2 gallon container because my 3 gallon container won't mount up without potential danger to the passenger tail light. Bring the price down and or design this stuff with the integration of all your products in mind and it's 5 stars for sure.

I installed this tire carrier kit on my 2014 JKU, after upgrading to 35x12.50R17 Goodyear MT/R's. The spare tire fit on the stock tire carrier, but I found myself looking in the rear view mirror every time I hit a bump in the road, expecting to see my spare tire and tire carrier fall right off the tailgate. As soon as I opened the package for the Teraflex HD carrier, I could tell how solid this piece is; it's got a good heft to it as it's made from solid aluminum. The install was a breeze, took me about 45 minutes with nothing more than hand tools. The hardest part of the install for me was getting the little spacer gaskets to line up with the holes on the tire carrier. I'd recommend this to anyone that doesn't want to spend $1200+ on a rear bumper with a tire carrier to carry an oversized spare, but wants the peace of mind that having a solid setup provides. I'm glad I didn't go the cheap route and buy one of the imitations of this product, I've ran Teraflex parts on both of my Wranglers and have had nothing but good experiences with their products.

This carrier is really awesome. The instructions provided by Teraflex are very clear and easy to follow. It took me about 2 hours to install, mainly due to the time it takes to remove and install the T50 torx screws. It just takes time to crank them around with the tool provided by Teraflex. All of the holes lined up nicely, and there were no issues during installation. My only concern was how tight I was cranking down the screws/bolts, because I don't have a torque wrench. This carrier is very solid and was a nice upgrade to the stock tire carrier. The rear gate feels and shuts very solid, now. I highly recommend this as a 35" tire carrier that keeps a stock look and feel.

At first in 2016: Great instructions, easy install, works exactly as designed to support 35's. Very happy with this.After 2 years:Pins have become so frozen the tailgate barely moves. 35" tires. Never driven in winter. 2 years old. Tailgate used only occasionally. Poor design of pin and sleeve causes the pin to become frozen to the sleeve preventing free movement. After disassembly with a shop press I can see how the pins were not lubricated from factory, and required a complete refresh after only 2 years of basic use, to function. Just like the Jeep OEM door hinges, poor design. I wish I could say better because I like Teraflex products alot. Not well thought out pivot design, not long lasting.

Well designed and solid part. Weighs 23 lbs, but you remove 5.2 lbs of factory hinges, so the net gain is 18 lbs. Much less than a bumper with tire carrier.For shims I used some thin pieces of wood I had lying around. You don't need anything fancier. I also placed tape on each end of the tailgate so that I could check if the tailgate moved during the install.Only hiccups I had was that I needed to remove the right side stock rubber bumper, and then cover the hole. Also the lower hinge inner lower bolt was hard to get started, as it was very close to the hinge. The hinge bolts pick up a plate inside the bodywork which can move around considerably when the bolts are removed, so when the outer bolt is tightened the plate torques around a bit. I ended up loosening the outer bolt and then moving the backing plate with a screwdriver. Even then I needed to grind the stock bolt a little on the outside to get it started.What I would recommend is to loosely thread the inner hinge bolts at the same time you install the hinge in order to prevent this problem. You have to screw them down a fair way to allow the support to close in order to align it in the center of the tailgate.Edit: BFG 35s fit with the stock bumper. They rest against the bottom of the bumper, but the tailgate closes ok and the brake light is visible as well.

Excellent fit and an easy install. I had to use a breaker bar with a 1/2 inch drive on a T50 Torx socket to free the factory body hinge bolts. (I could not get enough leverage with the supplied L shaped T50 lever). I applied auto primer paint to cover the unfinished metal under the hinges on the body and tailgate. I purchased a set of wooden shims at the hardware store that were useful in wedging the tailgate in position for when the factory hinges are removed, allowing perfect alignment with the replacement Teraflex hinge. I used red thread locker on the body hinge bolts and blue thread locker on the remaining tailgate bolts.Good written instructions provided plus there is a useful You Tube Teraflex video. Well packaging for shipping.The tailgate is now very secure and the forged steel hinge pins makes the tailgate harder to open and close, but also much less likely to close on you. There are additional mounting points for other Teraflex equipment, I filled these holes with rubber grommets to keep out crud and mud etc. I retained my original Rubicon spare wheel /tire and was able to use the original Jeep tire mount.
