The rocket scientist who installed my dock used a couple 3" angle brackets to hold the dock to the shore. The poles were placed 3' apart. I purchased these along with the backing plates since the angle brackets ripped out of the dock taking a chunk of the 2x12 with it. I mounted these 20' apart using the backing plates and pins and the dock is now really, really, stable. For the first time in 10 years, I'm not worried about the dock floating away. The last time, the boat, shore station, and dock ended up 1/2 mile away on the other side of the bay and cost me $500 to have it all returned and remounted. I have no such worries now even with heavy raid forecast for the entire next week.
