What Does a Timing Belt Do?
The timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft turning at the correct rate.The crankshaft moves pistons up for compression and exhaust cycles, while the pistons move down for power and intake cycles. Depending on the vehicle make, a timing belt will also run the water pump, oil pump and injection pump.
When do the timing belt with water pump need to be replaced?

1) The water pump doesn't have clearance for the upper inside bolt so you can't get a socket on the bolt to tighten it. I had to change out the bolt for an Allen screw bolt to get it to work. The pump casting simply doesn't have enough clearance there, whereas the OEM Audi / VW pump has clearance.2) Biggest flaw: the idler pulley is 2mm too wide. I compared it with my old idler and measured with my calipers. That 2mm renders it completely useless. Not only would it have rubbed on the belt cover, I couldn't even get the belt cover on, let alone the serpentine belt pulley. There's not a lot of clearance there, Audi / VW didn't leave any margin in the design. But this is inexcusable, a full 2mm too wide on a pulley that has ribs on the edge, it would have likely rubbed on the engine case too.I had to resort to putting the old idler back on because I need to get that car back on the road until I get the proper idler pulley. If I could return this set I would have otherwise. Cheap parts = zero quality control.

Overall the kit was great but the water pump is missing the slot for the oil dip stick. So be prepare to grind off the area where the dip stick goes, otherwise the dipstick will be rubbing on the timing belt. And everything will be a waste.

I was pleased to find that the water pump in this kit actually has a metal impeller while from another reviewer I was under the impression that it was plastic, it appears that the manufacturer has upgraded the quality of its parts. Apart from that I am very pleased all around with the quality of the parts and would be happy to install them on any vehicle which I plan to keep on the road for may years, not one which is possibly on its last legs like the one I bought these for. I feel like I definitely made the right decision to go with this kit!

First off, it's good quality at a low price but... The water pump impeller is plastic, not metal. Second, the hex head slot in the tensioner pully should be 6mm but it's not, it's somewhere between 5.5 and 6 so be prepared. Otherwise it's a good kit foir the price.
