This is a great product. I bought is for going over seas and travelling in the U.K., France and Belgium. It was cheaper to buy this portable unit than to rent a car with sat/nav. I updated all the maps before our trips and I was amazed at how well it worked. We traveled extensively and were never lost or confused. It even warned us of upcoming camera areas and alternate route due to construction. Lots of warning ahead of time to make your turns and clear visuals as well. Can also use it in cities for foot travel as long as the battery lasts. Worked well in night mode as well. Updates easy.Would not be with out it. Good for North America as well.

Have used it in Britain, Portugal, Canada and USA. As long as you keep putting in updates (reminds you constantly) it is usually very accurate. I think it is better than the Garmon I have (street pilot) and way better than a vehicle GPS.

The GPS came loaded with Canada US and UK maps. I decided to update the UK just to make sure I had the most current edition for our upcoming trip. I followed the instructions for down load by first removing the UK maps to make room for the new edition. A message came up stating that there wasn't sufficient room on the device to install the new edition. Great...... my options were to put a new card in it for additional space or look for other ways to reduce the volume in the GPS. My model didn't come with a port to load a new card, so that was out.To create new space, I then proceeded to removed all the voices except for the one I would be using. That created some space but not sufficient. Frustration set in and I was trying all sorts. Final solution was to only import that section of the UK maps that I would be using. As it turned out, UK maps can be down loaded in section...who knew? I found the instruction manual for this product was less that helpful and put me in a position of having to proceed with a down load through trial and error. This is not what I expect of a new product....the whole process was frustrating to say the least. The product functioned well during the trip which was a relief after initially loosing faith at the outset. You would expect that if the machine came with the maps already installed, you would be able to update them very easily. Not in this case!

We bought this because our old TomTom which has served us faithfully for many years in the US did not have enough space to put the Europe maps on this when we were planning on driving through Italy. I've seen a number of different brands but TomTom has the best maps and graphical interface.Customizations: You can use the voices on the machine or download from the internet (we have "Sean", a male Irish voice). If you want to use the text-to-speech to read the street names, then you need to select the computer voices. The cool feature with TomTom's too is that there are actually instructions on the web for all the voice instructions file names. So if you are really motivated, you could record your mom or your spouse, for example, saying the different instructions, save as the appropriate file names and upload to the device via the computer interface. Then you would hear a familiar voice giving you directions!Great European features: The TomTom also comes with great features. Driving around a lot in the UK, the speed limits are not always posted but the TomTom tells you (and is right most of the time). It also know where all the speed cameras are and warns you with a special beep so you can be sure not to get a ticket. We have found this to be very accurate. It also warns you for train tracks and if you are speeding, although you can adjust the settings if you don't want these warnings. It also has a great data base of tourist attractions and parks. We visit a lot of historic sites and nature parks now through the National Trust and about 80% of the properties are already programmed in. The device can also tell you where hospitals and gas stations are. With the computer interface, you can also download customs categories. In the US, I had all Starbucks, my bank offices, and Targets for example programmed in. You can also easily add a location (such as IKEA) when you arrive at the new destination so you can easily navigate to it again later.A few of tips to do before you go!1. Turn on the device and update the maps before you leave on your trip! We waited to do this until we were in Italy and the device froze during the uploading of new maps (huge files) and then reported that it had no maps! We ended having to try to get out of Milan with only a tiny little sketch of a map we found in a tourist brochure--very frustrating. We were able to successfully troubleshoot this issue later in the trip and then enjoyed the benefits of having Sean to guide us through Tuscany and Umbria.2. Use Sean around home (or in familiar driving territory) before you go on a big trip to get used to the commands. For example, when he wants you to turn left now he says "Turn Left" but there is an earlier warning that you need to turn that can make it confusing whether you are supposed to turn now or in a little bit. Another example, is that when the road splits or there is an exit, he will typically say "keep left" (or in UK "keep right"). This can lead to some zigzagging and unnecessary lane changes. If you are used to this, you know that either he means "don't exit" or he means look at the little picture and see which lanes are ok to remain in.3. Beware of "Sean specials": We have noticed driving in the countryside in Italy and the UK that the modes for trip planning for fastest or shortest route often include less advisable detours through what often appear like back alleys or some questionable country roads. Once in Umbria, the road that Sean said turn on was a little cow path (seriously!) that when nearly straight down the mountain. We did not turn there obviously and he came up with a new plan. On the other hand, when we were in another old Italian city, they'd blocked off all the main roads back up the mountain to where we were staying for unclear reasons in between when we entered the city for dinner and when we'd finished. We just started driving up little lanes in the general direction of the mountains and eventually Sean led us (through back alley ways barely big enough for our Fiat 500--about the size of a mini) to an arch way in the old city walls that led onto the road up the mountain above the road block. The route was a bit hair raising, but given our lack of Italian language skills, I doubt we would have made it past the road block otherwise.4. Turn on device before you start driving: On cloudy days or near tall buildings, it can take some time to find the GPS signals. This can be very frustrating if you have already started driving and don't know where to go. TomTom made this cool feature where it saves the position when you turned the advice off so if you are still in same place you can have it plan the route from there and then direct you based on assumptions of timing until it gets the signal. It will also do this in the tunnels.5. Don't count on the device for driving among skyscrapers: I used the TomTom for years in Boston--very helpful as it is a confusing city to drive in even for locals--but it consistently doesn't work in the financial district/Chinatown where the buildings are tall and densely packed. Sean tries desperately to predict the location but often makes mistakes and can send us on a bit of a meandering path until we are finally out in a clear area. One way to get around this, is to look at the map view while you have a good signal so you know the route in case he gets confused.

This is the best GPS that I have ever used. I bought it for a month-long solo driving tour of Europe (Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland) in December 2014 and January 2015. I knew that the money spent on the GPS, a case and charger with world adapters would be fully returned in confidence and time saved on the trip. It saved a huge amount of stress on the trip and I highly recommend it.I have owned a Garmin, have a Ford factory system in my car at home, and (surprise) had a Toyota factory system in the car I rented for the trip. I prefer the TomTom to them all. It is very intuitive to use and set up, and the screen is higher definition and can be placed in a better viewing location than the Toyota system screen in the dashboard central column. I used them simultaneously and wound up turning off the Toyota system in the rental car and used the TomTom for the trip.By mounting the TomTom in the very bottom left corner of the windshield, with the bottom edge actually touching the dashboard, it did not obstruct the view of the road and was very easy to read while driving. Getting through some very complicated freeway interchanges was a breeze with the TomTom guiding you to the proper lane with a very accurate screen depiction of the road shape and signs, and with voice directions. Speed limit changes on the TomTom screen were within a few meters of the posted road signs, and you get a warning sound if you are speeding after a few hundred meters or so.Having the GPS allowed me to book some interesting hotels both ahead of time and some the same day, and to avoid parking fees by staying just outside of large cities. I pre-programmed the GPS with the first several hotels that I booked from home as "Favorites," and was ready to go with 2 touches on the screen.I would recommend using the GPS at home for a few days to get used to it, and also that you turn off the warnings for traffic lights and schools, which will make the unit beep and chime incessantly in cities. I picked up the rental car in Den Haag (The Hague), set the GPS and began driving but was immediately inundated with alarms. Not knowing if it was the car about to explode or the GPS was mad at me, I turned the GPS off and the alarms stopped. Disabling the traffic camera, traffic light and nearby school warnings fixed the issue.Within the next 10 miles I realized just how excellent the TomTom software truly is, and for the rest of the trip my drive was without stress. Tell TomTom to go to a City Center, Parking, a neighborhood name, or a specific address, and you are all set. The assurance, arrival time, flexibility in your route and confidence gained are worth every penny!Back at home, the TomTom software notifies you on your computer screen that updates are available for the maps. They say that there will be 4 updates per year, but they have updated at least that many times in the last 5 months.
