We ordered these tree protectors for our orchard for two main reasons. The first was to protect the bark of the tree from the string of the weed waker (strimmer) and the second was to protect them from porcupines. Some noteworthy observations from this item:1) The sheets are made from thick sturdy material that can resist standard line thicknesses when trimming near the tree, although wire lines or continuous contact with the guard will damage and eventually cut through the guard. For normal to moderate home use around trees using standard line thicknesses, these guards are more than enough to protect the bark of the tree from damage.2) The sheets can be joined together to create a wide variety of diameters and heights of guards as can be seen in the images. For instance:one sheet wrapped along the short edge creates a guard 3" in diameter and 14.75" tallone sheet wrapped along the long edge creates a guard 4.75" in diameter and 9.75" talltwo sheets doubled along their long edge and then wrapped makes a guard 5.5" in diameter and 14.75 talltwo sheets stacked along their long edge and then wrapped makes a guard 4.75" in diameter and 19" tall3) 6 sheets were included in the pack, so a wide variety of configurations can be made using each stack with additional ones joined along any edge to increase the height or diameter.4) The sheets are somewhat stiff but plenty pliable to bend into even the smaller diameters.5) Once joined the guards remained linked and can resist coming apart under normal flexing while in use.6) The guards function at low and high temperatures, although at extremely low temperature, they become slightly more brittle, but should still withstand normal use conditions.7) With respect to protecting the tree against animals, I am not sure yet. For non-climbing small animals like rabbits, they will work, but will need to be secured to the ground. They may deter run of the mill wandering rodents, but a determined rodent that really wants to get inside will be able to chew through the plastic. For climbing rodent like squirrels, they will simply climb the outside of the guard to get into the tree, so it will not deter these animals from stealing young fruit. For a porcupine, I am still unsure, but I suspect they can still climb the guard. My hope is that, if there is enough space between the guard and the tree (perhaps 3-5 inches), the porcupine will be far enough from the trunk to not attempt to climb. I will have to wait and see.Overall, these guards are well made and are able to protect trees from most risks. If it is squirrels or porcupines that are the concern, the verdict is still out but there may be a magic combination of diameters and heights that will work.

The actual material of these tree trunk protectors seems good quality. It is pliable yet sturdy, and looks just like the pictures. You can adjust the diameter of the trunk protectors by using the holes further in. The tabs on the side just slide into the holes without snapping. They stay put fairly securely. You can stack the trunk protectors one on top of the other, but they do NOT connect to each other at all. Thus it would be fairly easy to push one protector up and expose the bark, especially if a deer were to scrape against it. Thus why I only gave it 3 stars.
