I admit I was a little skeptical when ordering this salinity meter. I’ve always used Clorox chemical test strips to check the pool, plus my salt generator does provide a reading for salinity. But sometimes, for some reason, my salt generator readout is wildly incorrect. So, when I saw this device, seemed like something to give a look at.The device is straightforward. It first had to be put together (control head and wand), and that was simple enough. The instructions indicate that it DOES NOT need to be calibrated before use, but they do include a reference solution in the packaging just in case you want to check now or at some point in the future. I put the wand in the pool and slowly moved it around for about 10 seconds. Over that time, the reading rose from ~2700 to then stabilize at 3040. (Not sure why the tester has both a digital readout at the head, and a linear indicator system on the wand, but I guess 2 is better than 1 in case something fails over time.) That reading seemed about right as the pool has been in that zone for a while. I then pulled out a chemical test strip which came back with ~3000. The head also has an accurate thermometer that I compared to my instant-read kitchen thermometer. All good.Very happy with this purchase.PROS: simple and effective. Long wand to minimize bending. Salinity & temp readouts.CONS: noneACCURACY OF AMAZON LISTING: highBOTTOM LINE: delightfully effective tool for pool chemical management.

This salinity meter comes out of the box in two pieces, the control head and the truncheon which, at one end, attached to the control head, and at the other has the sensor. The mechanical connection is a fine-threaded plastic joint; electrically there are contacts that must match in the interior. An O-ring protects the joint from water, and two spare O-rings were provided in the box. The head needs alkaline batteries for the electronics.Use is trivially simple: turn the head on, stick the sensor in the water, wait until the numbers stabilize, done. There is an LCD back-lighted display in the head, and a graded row of individual red LEDs on the truncheon where the one LED by the closest marked concentration turns on to report the current result. As simple as this.Out of the box, at the first actual measurement attempt this new portable meter LCD display read 3070 ppm vs. the existing fixed meter reading of 3050 (on a scale with 50 ppm division, e.g. 3000, 3050, 3100), which in my book is the same result. The single LED on this portable meter's truncheon was lit up at the 3050 mark. No calibration was needed.

First unit had moisture build up in it within a week, never dropped in the pool or anything, unit died. Got a replacement sent out so far its working good. Not sure what happened with the first unit... Functions good, accurate, easy to read.

Since we got our hot tub a few years ago I've used test strips to check the salinity. My spa dealer has told me that they're not very accurate and, based on bringing samples I've tested to them to test, they seem to be right. (They're NOT cheap, either). I'm just about to do a water change in my tub (450 gallons) and got this meter to help me at least get the salt level close to correct.Channeling my HS and college Chemistry labs I just tried to check the accuracy of this meter. My goal was to create a salt 3000ppm solution, at least as well as I can. First, I tested my kitchen scale. Some years ago I bought a set of test weights here on Amazon, and I verified that my scale measured accurately at 10g through 800g (using 500g, 200g, 100g weights). Each time my scale settled on the correct number. I have a plastic graduated cylinder, but 250ml in it only weighed 247g so i decided to go with weight.I zeroed the scale and measured 1kg (1,000g) into a bowl. Since my scale isn't good at measuring small weights, and doesn't display 10ths or grams, I added salt until the scale just turned to 1,003g, which should yield my 3,000ppm solution. When I tested this solution with the meter I got a reading of 2,950 - more than accurate enough considering my measuring challenges. I'm changing the water in the tub today or tomorrow. My usual process is to add the salt and various chemicals over a day or so, and to let the tub stabilize as I adjust alkalinity, pH, Salinity, etc. After about a week I take a sample to the spa dealer for their "lab" to test. If I find that this meter doesn't correlate with their measurements I'll update this review, but for now, at least, I think I finally fouond a quick, easy, accurate way to check the salinity in my tub.

Recently I treated my large freshwater aquarium for some parasite/ich issues by using salt. Guesstimating the salt was a bit tricky without knowing the actual volume of the aquarium minus displacement, filters etc. Most aquarium salinity monitors, if any at all, can't measure such a low salinity. Even the local aquarium shop said there's no way to measure it. Well, that's where this is perfect. This confirmed that the amount of salt I had put in was right where I wanted it to be. Using the salt, I noticed a dramatic improvement overall with the aquarium, but the treatment level of salt was only temporary, and I wanted to reduce the salinity for a much lower maintenance level. That makes measurement even more difficult. But still with this, I did a big partial, got my new lower salinity reading and added salt gradually to get it right where I wanted it. This is such an amazing tool I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

This is a great alternative to the expensive test strips. I like that it's reusable as opposed to the pricey strips. The length is great to get a more accurate reading away from the surface. It's easy enough for my kids to even use. I feel that it's pretty accurate with its readings. Great value for the price. It pays for itself if you were spending money often on test strips.
