For obvious reasons, typewriter ribbons are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Often old dried out stock is sold that makes barely legible type. Fortunately, these ribbons seem reasonably fresh for effective printing. The instructions on the package are useless but fortunately I didn’t need them. Due to spool incompatibility, it was necessary to transfer the new ribbon to the original spools of our Olivetti manual typewriter but I’ve become accustomed to that issue. A hole at the end of the ribbon attaches to a spike on the inside of the spool. You manually turn the empty spool thereby winding the ribbon from the supply spool. Then you attach the other end of the ribbon to the other spool of the typewriter so you end up with new ribbon on two original spools and discard the new ribbon spools. In case you are wondering, yes we know how to use a computer. We just like to keep our 80-year-old typewriter working and occasionally use it for quickly addressing an envelope or typing a note. It’s neater than our handwriting.

Overall, this is a decent typewriter ribbon. A couple things about it stood out to me. The four-pack was packaged very efficiently. They wasted no space in the box. That being said, however, someone should have opted for clearer installation instructions. Thanks to YouTube University, I was able to walk through the basics. However, the graphics on the box were a joke. Ironically, they were not printed clearly, so I had no idea which side of the spool was supposed to face upward. It took quite awhile before I was typing with a functional ribbon. While the ink is not quite as dark as I hoped, it does the job. I appreciate the intention behind it being a universal ribbon. However, I do not think such a thing exists. While it works in my Royal Quiet De Luxe, the spools do not fit perfectly. Maybe they fit better in a different model. I also wish the ribbon had red ink in addition to black. You can't win 'em all, though. I am just happy to breathe new life into my 80-year-old typewriter. Who knew typing could be this much fun?
