A 3 pound ball pein hammer is my go to hammer for working metal. Anything lighter doesn't have the force. Anything heavier you have a hard time controlling. I like a wooden handle for the feel. This one is made well. Will last my lifetime. Or until I lose it. Well worth the extra money.

When a big hammer is required there is no substitute. This is a good hammer. I am pleased with my purchase.

Back in 2003, a fellow metal sculptor let me use his craftsman 48oz ball peen hammer to texture some 1/4” steel plates. I was amazed. He was pretty careful with its use, and I had to grovel to borrow it.More than 20 years later, and after many short attempts to see if Craftsman would reintroduce the hammer, I finally spent a couple hours in the web, searching for something comparable.I was surprised and delighted to discover that the same hammer (same manufacturer) was being sold by Vaughan, and for an amazing price. This is the fulfillment of a 20 year micro-dream. It hits and textures just like I remember, and it’s almost surreal to have it actually perform like I remembered, because really, what measures up to a 20 year memory nowadays?I’m thrilled. The picture is the 48 oz hammer on my 400 lb anvil: 37” by 5” — It’s a big hammer, with notable rebound; great for texturing cold or hot steel.Jacob Dean

Good solid hammer. I own two smaller Vaughn ball peins, and very satisfied with them. I mostly use them to straighten steel shafts before machining them. Also great for “pursuading” sticky machinery parts. I know this next part is me being picky, but the older Vaughn hammers’ heads were turned. It gave them an Art Deco look. It gave them character. The new ones are rough hand polished. Work the same, just don’t look the same.
