The controller is absolutely needed to regulate the temperature. I compared it to an older mat I have been using for years. This mate kept the set temperature while the old mat was extremely hot near 90 degrees vs the new one at 75 degrees. I bought another one because it work so well. My seedlings are doing fantastic compared to last year with an uncontrolled mat. Well worth the investment. If the mats alone drop in price I will buy a set of them and run two off one controller.

This arrived in good packaging. The controller is easy to use and the Matt is not as rigid as my last one. If you have a smaller set up it can be adjusted as needed against a wall.

This keeps a good constant temperature and fits well in the bottom of a cooler. Popped out the spigot from the cooler and put the plug throug through the hole, and used a paperclip to hang the thermostat from the handle of the cooler. Perfect for my sourdough starter and dough!

They are working well to keep my houseplants alive. They live on a windward facing windowsill and these help maintain a steady temp at the root zone! You can adjust the temp to be comfortable for the plants you have. Also, the mat is pretty large so you can fit 5 or 6 small pots no problem.

Comparing this to another brand, the AC Infinity brand is completely flat and smooth, whereas the Vevor has ridges running along the length of the heat mat where the heating elements are located. I felt like there was some hot spots on the heat mat when I ran my hand over it.The AC Infinity has a low/med/high setting…it worked really well on my mushroom Monotub even on the lowest setting, which helped to increase the humidity.The Vevor has no on/off button. You must unplug to turn it on or off. It does have a temp probe you can insert into the soil.I do like you can get specific about the temperature and it has a temp probe you can put into the soil or wherever.Instructions say you can also use this for brewing purposes, which makes me wonder if you could also use it for making yogurt.I must say I prefer the smoother heat mat over the Vevor brand, but if you want to be able to adjust the temperature, the smoothness may not be as much of an issue.
