I have a 60lb terror that resides in my home and is basically a mix of every cattle/ranch dog from across the world wrapped up into a super hyper puppy. In his world, everyone is his friend, and he enjoys knocking over small children like bowling pins to lick them. To be fair, he is still a puppy and is still learning self-control, but it has been a process. This also made him a perfect test subject for the Voocoo retractable leash. We have another retractable leash that is popular on Amazon (rhymes with HUG) and I am directly comparing the Voocoo to it as I write this. I am by no means a retracto-leash expert but will do my best to give it to you straight.The overall construction is solid, and the design is well thought out. The ABS plastic used feels denser and more rigid when put up against the competition. The locking mechanism is smooth and positive; and having the single control button to operate it is significantly better; this button lock is my favorite feature of the leash. The built-in light has an 800mah battery which provides plenty of throw for evening walks and I like the fact that the USB-C charge port is covered to keep out dirt and debris. While the terror does just fine navigating in the dark, I appreciate not tripping over lifting sidewalk slabs, or stepping in a stank patty left by an inconsiderate pet owner. I did not test the longevity of the battery, but it was more than enough to cover a 45-minute walk. Lastly, the underside of the handle has a connection point for a proprietary doggy bag dispenser that you can purchase for an additional $10 – mine did not come with one and I plan to purchase it separately.My one complaint is that the handle size is small for me. I wear XL gloves and cannot comfortably grip the handle with all four fingers. It would be nice if there was an extra inch in the grip. I cannot fault the product based off my ogrish hands, but it is something to note for anyone else who has chunky meat hooks.The Voocoo performed admirably on several walks with the ever-shedding, child tackling terror. When the scruffy little monster transitioned into ‘sled dog’ mode, the nylon lead had no problems holding him at bay. The locking mechanism was also tested several times throughout my testing. Before long, squirrel mode was activated; this occurs when I am caught off-guard as the terror chases after a squirrel running across the street. Situations like this do not allow the time needed to engage the lock and the lead runs out to its end. No damage was done, and the lead retraction spring was not damaged. Under the ‘OMG, it’s a small child!’ mode, I was able to proactively identify the threat and lock the leash as the terror attempted to accelerate to ludicrous speed, effectively delivering the maximum amount of force against the mechanism; again, with no damage or reduction in performance.So… for a couple bucks more than the ‘other’ brand, you get a retractable lead with better build quality overall and built-in flashlight as a bonus. If you have gorilla mitts and do not like the idea of using a 3-finger grip on this lead, you may want to look elsewhere.

On the plus side, the light on this very nice sized retractable leash is nicely bright, the feel of the handle is quite comfortable and the quality of the actual leash is good. Initially, it's very easy to use, the clip worked smoothly, but over time, the button to lock the leash became more difficult to latch and it didn't stay. So, while I would have given it a 5 star at first glance, after using it for a month- 2 walks per day with a 55 lb. dog, it seems to be wearing out a bit.

I ordered this leash for myself but when my husband saw it, it became his. To be fair, he is more likely to be walking our dogs after dark, so I see his point. I was able to use it for a few days before he confiscated it though. He was thrilled with the flashlight! What a wonderful feature! It’s rechargeable, so I never have to worry about keeping batteries on hand. It’s actually useful because it’s impressively bright as. Before my husband stole the leash from me, I found that it feels good. Nice weight, not too light weight while not too heavy either. It is shorter than my other retractable leash. This shorter leash works better for our older dogs while the longer ones worked better for puppies when we have them. I say that because our puppies tend to be more energetic and want to run and play so the longer leash allows them to run out more energy while I can stay on the sidewalk and simply watch rather than having to run with them. LOL I never thought to measure to check the actual length of a leash and in hindsight that’s very naive of me. After noticing others mentioned that it wasn’t really 10 ft I measured. Mine is actually 9’7” so it’s 5” shy of the advertised length? Or maybe they are counting the length of the handle too? Either way, I wouldn’t have known the difference without measuring but it does seem like there’s some variance. The break and lock work smoothly. It’s very easy to push down to stop, and then if I want to lock the length it’s simple enough to just slide the lock in place to hold the position. It’s nicely ergonomic and has a good feel. I liked it quite a lot before my husband took it, and now it’s his favorite leash. When purchasing one of these leashes certainly consider what you want and need. If you won’t need more than 10ft and you have a small, medium or well-behaved large dog this is a wonderful leash. The flashlight is an awesome addition for anyone that will need to use it after dark, or heck, it’s nice to just have a flashlight available. I think that if I had a rowdy larger dog, I’d probably opt for a traditional leash that can slide over the wrist and be held by 2 hands. That’s just my option though. For my medium sized dogs, I love the retractable leashes, and I really like the extra option of the flashlight.
