Product Description

A Dual-Channel '73 For The Rest Of Us

If there’s one style of preamp that professional engineers would unanimously agree has defined the tone of pop/rock records for decades, it would most definitely be the venerable '73-style of mic pre. '73-style preamps have been massively used in recording and live applications for many years and are still considered to be the “Holy Grail” of preamp choices today. The Warm Audio “WA73 Family” consists of single and dual channel '73-style preamps (with & w/out EQ), that each pay careful homage to British audio history.

When we at Warm Audio decided to release the WA273 it was imperative that it met vintage expectation in both design and performance. The tone and sweet character that vintage '73-style mic preamps impart is so unique and familiar, that we had only the pure desire to release sonically accurate reproductions. After years of R&D, intense research, and countless hours of auditioning, the WA273 was born!

The WA273 is a “Desert Island” boutique preamp, but it can also be classified as a studio and live work-horse. Classic '73-style preamps are known for being versatile tools that work with all kinds of microphones from Condenser, to Dynamic, to Ribbon. The WA273 equally shines on all types of microphones and sources including; vocals, acoustic/electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, orchestras, keyboards, and even as a tone shaping tool to run partial or complete mixes through. With 80dB of gain and a fully discrete Carnhill Transformer balanced signal path, there’s no recording, mixing or engineering task that the WA273 can’t handle.

This WA273 has 2 channels, and channel #2 was defect when i received it. Lower volume and unpleasant distortion on channel #2, Dont know if its bad QA check from WARM QA team or was damaged in the shipping.

This thing sounds fat just like the real Neve, but costs about half the price. Warm Audio is legit, I know a lot of professionals who swear by their stuff. I love the inputs on the front, and the line switch allows me to run it as an insert in my daw. I like to run my entire mix through this thing, but the gain must be very low or it distorts. But hit that sweet spot, and it makes your mix come to life.

I've used a lot of Warm products over the years, all with good results. But in my opinion the WA73 is hands down the best thing they've ever built. This preamp has revolutionized my recordings. I find that I'm spending far less time mixing after tracking with this thing... everything I've recorded with it just has a certain depth to it that isn't there with other pre's. I could gush for a while longer but instead I'll do a pros and cons list.Pros:-Obviously, quality of sound. I've never tracked through a real vintage Neve, but this gets that sort of thick, 70's vibe. Vocals take on a roundness, electric guitars get hairy, bass is rich. Acoustic guitar sparkles and piano jangles. Everything just sounds exactly like it should. I've not tracked drums yet, since the WA412 is my go-to for percussion, but I'm sure it would make a kit sound great too.-Versatility: Separate gain and output controls, plus the "tone" switch, Inserts, AND adjustable hi-pass filtering makes this a jack of all trades kind of preamp. Additionally, the ability to choose between Preamp and Line settings with the push of a button makes it useful for adding a little mojo to finished in-the-box mixes if you want.-Small footprint: space is of the essence in a small studio like mine, so I appreciate the 1 rack unit size of this pre! However the knobs and buttons don't feel small- the pots are smooth and just "stiff" enough. The gain knobs are stepped too, which is awesome.-Hi-Z jack on the front makes direct recording of bass or acoustic guitars fast and convenient.-Price: Recording is NOT a cheap pursuit, but relative to a lot of other stuff out there, most WARM gear is downright affordable. I've owned other Neve-style clones that cost more, do less and sound worse.CONS:-Honestly I can't think of any, especially for this price. I do hope that Warm eventually makes a standalone EQ-only unit so that those of us who already own the preamps could add EQ.Overall, what a great addition to my studio. I used it to record a couple demo tracks the other day and sent them to my writing partner, who has spent hundreds of hours in my studio. His response was "did you record these at your place??" Self-own or not, I'll take the compliment and give Warm 273 the credit!
