I would actually say that this kit is definitely beginner friendly. Someone other than a beginner would not be satisfied with the paint or the brush. For kids, I give a thumbs up though. The book makes it all worth it.

This just arrived so I haven't tried to actually use it yet but I'm pleased with the design and overall quality. It's not a serious course on watercolours but should be an enjoyable way to pass the time and relax. I enjoy painting, it's very soothing and calms the nerves. This seems more of a hobby set which is exactly what I wanted. After I've used it I may update the review.

This watercolor workbook is definitely nicely compiled, but I have never done any watercolor (except way back in school) and as such, I don't really think this is all that ideal for beginners. The book relies on mimicry but doesn't really explain/demonstrate techniques, brush types or anything you would really need to get started. I feel that many of the watercolor flowers are rather advanced. The quality of the print is pretty good, but the paints are definitely not the best and the brush is a “no from me”. I will say that the paper quality is a little bit better than I expected as I was expecting something along the lines of tissue paper thin. Would I recommend this kit? I honestly am not sure. It's not really for beginners and advanced artists may find it unnecessary (if that makes sense).

Where to begin? I have mixed feelings about this watercolor workbook. The watercolor paper here has some tooth to it, making it ok for a beginner because it absorbs the water and paint. The flowers to paint are pretty cuteThe description on Amazon was not clear, but this does come with a paint palette with 12 dry blocks of color. The top comes off completely and you can use that as a mixing trayIt comes with one flat edge kid paintbrushesThe dry paint blocks are opaque paint, meaning you wont be able to really see through it once it is on the paper. It makes it look like you painted your picture without sketching it first. On the downside, you dont get the magic of transparent watercolor paint. The one small flat paintbrush has to do the job of painting in larger areas and because it has very firm bristles, you can actually turn it on edge to almost get a point. You can tear the pages out since it is in a spiral notebook. If you leave it in the amount of water and paint used will buckle the paper. You could take it out and tape it to a hardboard to prevent that if you wish. I think it would have been so much better if they include a round paint brush (these have a pointed tip), so if you can grab one to add to this, your little painter will have much more success. Now for the not so good…. this is clearly a knock off of the watercolor workbooks by Emily Lex. Some of the flower sketches are EXACTLY the same. Some of the paragraph explanations of painting and mixing paint, etc. are EXACTLY the same. How do I know this? I had just received a watercolor workbook by Emily Lex while this Amazon booklet was enroute to me and the similarities are glaring. I dont like piracy, so no, I would not get this again. However, should you choose to purchase this booklet it would be appropriate for a beginner in the 6-10 age range.

I am a watercolorist. As an artist, one thing i have learned is it is best for those who are somewhat serious about watercolor and becoming an artist, it is best to work with pretty good paints. I got this because it looked like it would be a good relaxing project book.BAGSThis set comes in two bags. One bag houses the spiral bound workbook and the watercolor paints which are housed in another bag. Both bags are pretty flimsy, so if you plan to use them to store your book and paints in, you might want to get a different bag ready.BOOKThe spiral book is pretty nice, but it is unrealistic in scope. The colors shown in the swatches in the book are nothing like what is found in the paint set. The swatches are not really obtainable using the watercolor paints in the set. The instructions are minimal and if you know nothing about painting yet, this book might not be the best choice to start out with. The pages are watercolor paper so they work.PAINTS AND BRUSHThe paint set in this kit is pretty poor quality. The paints look like really young children's paint. The colors are chalky and they are not at all what is shown in the swatches in the workbook. The brush is cheap and a blunt wider brush- not going to help with detail that is shown in the workbook.IS THE BOOK WORTH IT?If you are like me and have a decent set of good quality watercolor paints, this book might be worth having. You can do some mindless painting on days when you need some creative inspiration and find enough here to make some fun paintings. If you are not familiar with painting at all and don't have a lot of paints handy, I think you might be disappointed in this kit. You won't get the results shown in the book with what comes with this.THE BOTTOM LINEThe book has possibilities, but the paints are poor quality.MY RATINGTHREE STARS. I plan to use the book, but will be using better quality paints than what is in the kit. I will try to post finished picture or two when I am finished, but until then, I wanted to let you know what you will be in for if you get this.

The book is nicely put together and walks you through the basics of watercolor. Each set of thick watercolor pages shows you what they’re painting and the colors you will need. The steps for each painting are laid out very simply to get the best result. Of course you are allowed to paint however you want. The opposing side is a stencil guideline of the painting to help building confidence in painting. I personally was hoping for it to be blank but I can always get extra blank watercolor paper and let my kiddo use the book stencil.
