This new microprocessor driven technology will recognize lithium ion and lead acid battery chemistries and automatically adjust the charging profile to match the battery type. No more buttons. No more switches. RV owners will have the peace of mind that their batteries will be accurately charged, eliminating the risk of over and under charging. Additionally, with multi-stage charging and current monitoring in both lead acid and lithium profiles, battery life will be maximized.

I bought this to replace a similar unit in my camper when I added LiPO4 batteries. This unit is made to work with these batteries as well as older types. This unit has been charging my batteries for a year now and they are still performing like new. You can hear the fan when it runs but it only kicks on when I'm drawing a significant load and plugged into AC.

Perfect product for direct replacement of non-lithium WFCO. Very easy to install -- simply label existing wires and transfer to new converter. Fantastic upgrade on our camper. Does a great job of managing our lithium batteries.

I bought an older camper that had an electric panel similar to this. Unfortunately, the converter on my old panel was fried and did not charge the battery or my camper, making it useless. Unfortunately, it’s a non-serviceable part so I had to replace the entire panel; so I bought this! It’s an almost exact replacement but this one seems to have a few more features - the “AutoDetect” feature which supposedly optimized charging for lithium batteries. This seems a bit like a gimmick because who uses lithium batteries for their camper? But who knows! Maybe this feature will be more useful in the future if / when lithium technology improves. The install was a little intimidating, but manageable. Mind you that for me, this was an exact replacement, so basically just take out the old box and wire this one the exact same way the old one was set up. If you’re installing this but previously had a different brand, I imagine it would be a bit more difficult.I like that this has a variable speed cooling fan, so as the converter is only proving a little power, the fan is very quiet. When using a lot of 12V power, it’ll be a bit louder. But not too noticeable.A few tips:- LABEL YOUR WIRES. This box will have wires coming out of the back that are a variety of colors, and these will connect to wires within your camper. Be sure to LABEL each of these wires with the color they are connected to. For example, there was a blue wire coming out of this box, but will connect to a GREEN wire from my camper?? It makes no sense and will not be consistent from camper to camper, so be sure to label really well!- Remember that this doesn’t come with breakers. You will need to disconnect your old breakers and install them in this box, or buy new ones. I ended up just buying new ones - they are around $15 each from Lowe’s.The identical one that came in my camper lasted for 10 years, so hoping this one will last at least that long!

Installed this in a van conversion and it is working perfectly. I have a background in electronics engineering so that certainly helped.

This doesn't charge the lithium batteries all the way. I've read this in other reviews and threads. I wish it had a switch. I don't feel like having to mess with things. Many have to create a load to get it to see the lithium. I guess my batteries will be discharged a bit sooner and not loose as much capacity. Ill probably hook up a inverter/charger at some point since they have a nice auto switchover feature.I'd also like to see it have a temperature sensor lead for the batteries. Many lithiums don't have cold weather cut off sensors and could be damaged if charged in the cold at 40Amps. I switch off my batteries till about 2 hours after the unit is warm inside or I turn off the converter charger breaker. It has a decent amount of AC breakers, DC fuses and fuses if the battery gets hooked up backwards. I'd recommend getting a proper fuse on each battery too. The door latch will break eventually, but they do sell the part.

Swapped out my 8740-P unit with this one which has auto detect. Swap was 1:1 replacement and pretty straight forward, but after having it installed for over a week the unit stays in absorption mode with my lead acid batteries and never goes into float mode. Over charging lead acid batteries damages the batteries. This unit must not be detecting I have lead acid batteries. My older unit would always go to float 13.2V. This one is not.

The original Wf-8735 converter failed in my 10 year old travel trailer. Decided to replace it with this newer automatically detecting version. The wiring for the units was pretty much identical which was great for an amateur like myself. Took pictures of all the wiring and labeled all wires prior to removal of old unit. Total time for the repair was about 2.5 hours. Obviously you have to cut off all power sources. The breakers need to be switched over as well as the fuses. Would have been a lot faster if I did not do all the labelling (but made the install much easier and less prone to a screw up). Replacement can be done by an average handyman like myself.

I love that WFCO came out with this to support installing and charging LiFeP batteries. They made the unit the same size and with exact mirror installation to the WF8740-P. However the auto detection process requires discharging the Li battery entirely and then re-charging it completely. This discharge/recharge cycle allegedly enables the AD feature to detect that the batteries are indeed Li. It’s a time-consuming process and is anything but automatic. RENOGY, on their DC-DC Chargers has a series of switches to set up the unit for the various battery types. That’s not automatic, but it is way easier. Here is the kicker, my unit did not switch over to Li Charge Mode after two discharge/charge cycles. After talking to tech support, I found out that I have to remove the unit and send it back for a firmware update. There are newer versions of this same unit that have the correct firmware, but that doesn’t help me. I got a dud. The time spent taking out the 8740-P and installing the 8740-AD was a significant project in my camper. Now I have to do it all over again. I would advise buying direct from WFCO, and making sure you get the model with the up-to-date firmware.
