I purchased this as a permanent ornament in the garden, but being that it was a “hallloween decoration” I was worried it may be lightweight and made of tin, or something similar. This is a legit wind vane. It has some weight to it and it’s made of “metal” or resin that looks like metal. I sat on this purchase for a while because I was worried about quality… very glad I got it!! I love it! One thing to note - the base does not come with screws to secure it to the roof, buy some if you don’t have them.

These Whitehall products are top of the line quality. This is my second weather vane purchase from this brand. I use them for decor and they are adorable. However this one was missing the wire that attaches the bat to the moon. I just fixed it myself with a wire instead of returning it. I didn’t realize I had purchased the version that has a fixed bottom to attach to an angle of roof. There are some on stands. I also just used a wood angled correctly to be able to add this to my stands. Works perfectly. Really well made and strong iron metal. Nothing cheap about this.

It is an absolute beautiful piece. However, was sent the wrong one or it was missing 2 key pieces. Roof mount and mast. Company supposed to be sending correct parts..we will see. The Metal, is very light and cheap. Not worthy of the price, if this was good quality Iron for a weathervane perhaps.

Easy to install and looks great. I mounted it on my mailbox post. Again, as in many other reviews, I had to use my own chain to hang the little bat.

Sad to have to give this 1 star...impossible to assemble. The metal key ring (for hanging the dangling bat) doesn't fit. Not even close. I'll have to go to the hardware store to buy a larger one, which will be visable but oh well. That said, it's so adorable I'm not sending it back. Got it as a living room decoration and im commited at this point! While I really do love the look, definitely not worth the money :(Packaging was also VERY difficult to open.

I like the design of the thing, and it seems sturdy enough once you put it together, but the one I was sent had a couple problems with it:1) The bolt that is used to secure the two directional sections together, wasn't screwed-in flush with the metal before it was sprayed with whatever paint/coating/etc. is used to color and protect the metal. Since threads were exposed, paint got into the screw threads, and made it impossible to insert past a certain point--making it unable to hold the directional arrows together against the post. When I tried using a power-drill; BAM, head instantly stripped. I had to find another (unpainted) screw that fit. The bolt needs to be flush before spraying.2) The 2 directional pieces themselves insert and are supposed to lock together. Either there was too much paint/coating on all of the pieces, or the parts themselves were warped/not formed correctly. Normally the arrow pieces should go around the main post and interlock--there were two spots on the NS & EW parts that prevented this from happening--at least 1/16th of an inch of metal/paint banged together, and prevented me from putting them together normally. They wouldn't go together unless I hammered them down to make them fit. I shouldn't have to use a hammer to assemble a weathervane. I must have looked stupid to my neighbors, doing this on my roof. And also, there is now bare metal exposed, which will probably cause it to rust faster. So the lesson here is that you should test-assemble all of this stuff before you climb onto the roof.

I felt I had to make a small modification to this item, but considering the price, I still think it rates five stars. Construction is solid and the paint looks very good. I hope it doesn't turn out to be powder coat but, if it is, I can easily respray it in place when the powder coat sloughs off. The description says it's stamped copper, but it's really cast aluminum alloy. The instructions I got were for the garden stake model, so I had to do just a bit of head scratching. The direction vanes go just above the second cast joint, but have to be slid in place separately to accomplish this. The hanging bat is unbalanced due to the type of mounting and hangs upright, as in the photo on this page. The instruction sheet shows it horizontal as though it's flying, and that seems to be what the designer had in mind. The screw holds the eye of it's hanging wire flat to the bat's back, not allowing the bat to balance. Fortunately, the screw hole is located approximately at the center of balance, so I replaced it with an eye bolt and now the bat is flying. The screw hole is threaded 6-32 and I didn't have an eye bolt that size, so I made one out of a bit of brazing rod and used thread locker. If you don't have a threading die the right size, you could probably epoxy a small screw eye into the hole. All in all, perfect for out haunted barn, and just in time for Halloween!

I would give this 6 stars because of the price and awesome look, the neighbors love it and some may be jealous. However, it needs to spin more freely when windy - aluminum on aluminum, no bearings. Super easy to assemble and mount, but the attachment to the bat isn't properly engineered for the weight/stress, or the right length for the bat to swing at the correct angle of orientation (think of a bird, it doesn't fly when vertically oriented, it hovers). Our bat flies! Come to think of it, I had to modify the bat attachment, and will need to downgrade to 4 stars

This looks wonderful. I could nitpik on some stuff. But considering I lucked out and got this at a great "used" price, I'm not going to bitch. ;o) They might have made the hanging bat out of rubber. If you live in a windy area, you'll hear it. lol I'm thinking of spraying it down with some of the rubberized coating stuff. Maybe it will muffle it a bit??? Also, I just go a new roof, or this would have been super easy to install. If you have the new vents they put across the WHOLE length on the peak of your roof, you may have to buy another stand designed for that style, or make sure you get SUPER long screws. lol Also, make sure you tighten it well at the base. I came home several times to make adjustments do to that and other things, such as the screws not going as far in as I had thought. Oh, also, they don't have holes in the base to secure it, but slots. Some didn't like that. Originally, I was going to use some fat eyehooks to screw in, since this was just going up for Halloween. But then ran into the issue with my vent. I think that pretty much covers it. I'm happy to elaborate on anything if you have a question, or need some help.
