Almost would not have purchased because of some reviews. Yes, it's plastic, so don't step on it or put it in a back pocket and sit on it. Perfect for non-rugged use. Mine has been in service for years without a problem (this one was purchased for my wife).

Plastic and very flimsy. For the price you would think you would get better quality, but instead your just paying for the name

After ordering Chinese calipers () that were allegedly metric, it was a relief to find this Swiss made, works-out-of-the box, and nicely designed Metric caliper.Measurements are advertised to be accurate to .1mm, and I found it to be slightly better. The dial has little grips that make it possible to zero the instrument easily. It is made out of a fiber-hardened plastic, and seems pretty durable except for the depth extension, which you'll have to be a bit careful with when it is extended.I use it to measure musical instrument parts, and so having a good plastic tool is actually an advantage, as it helps you avoid marring anything. There is another "ESD" (anti-static) model that about $15 more expensive, designed to work with sensitive electronic parts: .The model listed here appears to be identical to the ESD model, minus the anti-static certification. So if you don't need that, then you may as well save a few bucks and order this one.I would give it five stars except for: 1) there is no case, and the package it comes in is made for product display, not for convenient storage, and 2) the markings along the bottom rail are in 16ths of an inch instead of centimeters, which seems counter-intuitive for a metric tool. It does have metric markings along the top rail, but strangely, without graduations.Fortunately, neither of these minor complaints detract from the overall usefulness and accuracy of this fine instrument.Note that there are digital versions of this caliper as well, but do you really want to have to replace the battery in your calipers?
