THe swift is made of out of wood, it is unfinished. I am not sure if it is a bad design or if a part is missing. As it is, it collapses under its own weight. It is supposed to open kind of like an umbrella, but there is nothing to prevent it from collapsing. There is a wooden ring with a large wooden screw, and it is shown on top of the ring that holds the spikes. But the ring doesnt really do anything. In my older swift, there is a clip that lifts the bottom of it and it clips and prevents the bottom of the swift from going down under its weight. But here there isn't anything that would make it to go up . It is a very puzzling design. When I tried to hold it up and put a skein of yarn on it, it held the skein up, but as I was winding it off, the swift was going down and down, until at the end it all folded flat on the table with yarn tangled. On the pictures it shows the swift in the middle position, but mine wouldn't stay this way. When I looked at the videos of the similar yarn swifts from other manufacturers, it did show how there is some kind of insert in the top ring so it stays in place. This one doesn't have anything there. I think some crucial detail was missed here when they copied somebody else's design without understanding
