I have tried the various installers from the big box parts stores...the "universal" ones that expand and contract, the racheting bands with various sizes, even some of the heavier aluminum adjustable installers that fit a few different ring sizes.And then...I ordered the Wiseco 90.5 mm for a particularly touchy build on a motorcycle (if you've built a big Twin, you know you have to install the piston from the BOTTOM of the cylinder -- it isn't like building an automotive deal, or even a multicylinder metric engine.) I attempted to use the other types and I was worried about marring the new domed piston kit and/or the brand new cylinders that were not cheap. So, $50 or so seemed like a valid investiment even though this installer only works for the ring size specified (90.5mm in my case.)This thing is a thing of beauty. Glass smooth, heavy, it will NOT deform, no clamps needed, plenty of clearance for the cylinder (it fits over the flared end) to receive the piston and rings. Turns a 20 plus minute job into something even a novice can handle in minutes. If you are installing your own pistons/rings, I don't think $50 is an extravagant purchase to prevent screwing up an expensive component.
