Perfect deck of Tarot cards for beginners. Each card has the meaning written on it to make it easier to learn.

This review is for the larger size of the brown bordered Rider-Waite-Smith deck (by Witchy Cauldron). This brand also offers a standard size and a mini/pocket size of the same style deck. I was so excited to find this on Amazon because I've been wanting an oracle-sized RWS deck for awhile. From the pictures shown, I liked the brown border, and understood that the look of this deck would be slightly modified. The description indicated that the Major Arcana cards were "enhanced" with real world backgrounds. My first impressions: the cards were the oracle size I wanted, and this was a heavy deck. It felt solid when holding it. The card stock is just right - not too thick or too thin. They have a laminated linen finish and glide smoothly over each other when shuffling. The brown/tan tuck box they come in has a nice matte finish. Although it's odd that the deck doesn't really have a unique name - the box just says "Tarot Deck - Complete 78 Cards." They could have at least been called "Enhanced Tarot Deck" or "Elemental Tarot." Just makes the deck feel cheaply generic. The tuck box did ship inside a purple Witchy Cauldron brand outer box for extra protection. As I always do when opening a new deck, I go through each card to give them a quick look over and to verify that they're all there and labeled correctly. The modified backgrounds on the Major Arcana cards vary in their effectiveness. On cards with a lot of background space, the elements stand out well. My favorite is The Fool - it features a starry night back drop. You don't see much of the "nature" backgrounds on busier cards like the High Priestess, the Sun, and Judgement. As I continued to look through the deck, little things started to bother me. A couple of cards weren't trimmed well, causing uneven borders. Then I came to the Ace of Cups - even though it's a Minor Arcana card, it also had the "enhanced" style background (water/rain), as did the Two of Pentacles (clouds), Four of Pentacles (a sunset sky), and the Ace of Swords (blue/pink sky). The Three of Swords also had more prominent rain droplets, though they looked more drawn rather than photographic. I didn't like the randomness of some of the Minors also being modified. Either do all 78 cards in the deck, or stick with just the Majors as advertised. The description also mentioned a "vibrant color upgrade." On a lot of remaining cards, the background colors (and even some features like roofs, clothing) were just changed. Didn't really add anything. It kind of stood out by just looking wrong if you're used to working with a standard RWS deck with the traditional colors. Another modification that stood out immediately was that the chest of the female figure on The World card is covered by shells! The final thing that really irked me was that one card out of the whole deck of 78 has a different font!! (See photo). All the card names are shown in a basic typed font, but the Queen of Wands looks more like the hand-drawn font from Pamela Colman Smith's original artwork. While this deck was a good value for the price paid (especially for the larger size cards), the production value just seems lazy and sloppy.I own another Witchy Cauldron brand deck (The Lepus Tarot) that was much higher in quality, so I expected the same here. Unfortunately, all these little mistakes and oddities on this deck bother me too much. I won't be able to use this deck without focusing on the things that aren't right, so unfortunately I will have to return it.On a side note, I always read the Amazon reviews before making a purchase, but many of the reviews here feature photos of a completely different deck in a blue box with a more standard RWS look. Confusing and hard to make an educated decision about purchasing.

The guide book is lacking in definitions. It's better to just get a separate book. The names or the cards are not listed in numerical order, they are backwards. The spreads show the numbers backwards so I'm not sure which meanings are supposed to be applied.Beautiful Cards. These cards are easy to read to help decipher the cards. Some cards have the name of them written on them, some do not. There isn't any consistency to it as the court cards and the major and minor arcana's have both "named and unnamed".Many of the cards have PERIOD at the end of the names as if it were a sentence. As an English major it bugs me so I'm trying to let it go but it's annoying. The translation to english is probably confusing to the manufacturer and they probably don't know when a period is used. The same with the guidebook. The manufacturer probably doesn't read from "right to left" so the numerical order thing is messed up.Very minor details. Not a big issue at all. The cards are thicker and not as flexible to shuffle but it seems many buyers (reviewers) prefer thicker. My pictures show the cards as a light blue (or maybe it's my monitor) but the cards are a pretty mauvy green.

Thick linen cardstock. Great copy of the RWS. Cleaner lines with bolder colouring. Love it!

I am extremely impressed with this rendition of the Pamela Coleman Smith/Rider Waite tarot. The cardstock used is thick and durable and has a wonderful feel. The coating is smooth but not too slick. The printing is excellent and the colors are vibrant and historically accurate. Even the guidebook created by "Witchy Cauldron" as well put together and far better than most inserts that come with a deck. It is a small bound booklet with color illustrations and solid interpretations for each of the cards. I've been a professional tarot reader and collector for over 35 years and would recommend this for any of my students as well as other professional readers.
