Yes, this line holder will hold line, but even with a small fly attached the notches are not deep enough to securely hold the line AND the hook of the fly. Those plastic blue ones are much better.

When moving from place to place in river or on the bank, spooling my line and slipping the spool over the rod has so simple. Do remember to hand spool so that the line is not crinkled when you unwind. Otherwise, you must use a piece of rubber (I used a bit of an old bicycle inner tube) to straighten the line.
