If you're doing free hand routing, you know how tricky it can be to start the cut. Router bits tend to spin the board and gouge the wrong edge when you start the cut. This often results in damage to your carefully shaped furniture parts. Starting Pins can help you gain control but don't offer dust collection or protection from flying chips. The new Woodpecker Free-Hand Guard does all these things in a well built, high quality form. The Free-Hand Guard serves three purposes; first it provides a fulcrum to rest your board against, second a dust port for a hose hook up and third a shield to keep chips from flying up into your face. (The shield is not a substitute for goggles.)Our new Free-Hand Guard attaches directly to any Woodpecker Router Plate or Lift and Woodcraft's Pinnacle Router Plate that has 4 threaded starting pin holes. Two knobs make it simple and fast to install or remove. It's also adaptable to other brand plates by simply drilling two holes and using the included alternate attachment screws. (Instructions included.)The Free-Hand Guard is made up of a laminated birch base, a phenolic top plate, an acrylic shield with a combination 2 1/2-inch - 2 1/4-inch dust port. Accommodates materials up to 1 1/2-inch in thickness.

I have needed a means of collecting sawdust on my router table for some time. I do a lot of freehand routing, putting decorative edges on MDF sign boards. When I saw the Woodpecker dust collector I had to have one. If you have a Woodpecker router plate which is set up for attaching the collector then you have no problem and setup is easy. Unfortunately I had a generic router plate so mounting is more difficult. Stove bolts are included for attachment but this method presents two problems. The first being where you need to drill holes and mount the collector the router is mounted in the same area and I didn't want to drill through the router base. The second issue is that you want to easily be able to remove the collector to facilitate changing router bits or for when you want to use the router table fence. The solution is to use a nut riveter if you have one to mount nut inserts into your router plate. I had to countersink the rivet nut approximately 1/16" so that the top of the table was smooth. I also had to remove a bit of the rivet nut on the bottom so the router mounted flush with the bottom of the plate. This was a lot of work but for me it was worth it as the collector is very efficient at collecting the sawdust. In the past I had sawdust everywhere and was forced to breath it. This is a great product but you can save yourself a lot of headaches by buying and installing their router plate.

Excellent ft and finish. Captures 90% on router chips above table. With this run to vacuum and dust collector run to dust box around router I’m getting near 100% of dust and chips.

It’s well made but a little difficult to first install. Also, because my router station is attached to my table saw it isn’t a real go to item

This is a great product. I was skeptical how well it would work as I assembled it but some good thought was put into the design. The space between the clear plate and wood pieces allows for great airflow when used with a dust collection system. I am able to use the included threaded knob to directly attach this to my Kreg router lift—it can then be used a starter guide for routing. The packaging was also very impressive—inspection labels with names of who inspected what portion of the product. Great quality control.
