The new Woodpeckers Coping Sled is the router table accessory you need to make rail & style doors, tenons , lap joints and most other end grain cuts. The Woodpeckers Coping Sled uses two techniques to secure the your work piece. First it traps the board between the adjustable top plate and the fence. The slotted top plate is easily adjusted for material up to 5-1/2-inches wide. Trapping the board this way prevents the router bit from spinning the board. Controlling this rotational force is the most important part of accurately shaping end grain. Second, two clamps hold the piece down to prevent lifting. However very little clamping pressure is needed because the board is trapped as explained earlier. The two clamp knobs are part of the clamp beam which is adjustable so it can easily be set to the center of the board. Two handles are used to lock the clamp beam in place. Their location is always directly above the clamping force and well away from the router bit. Another important feature is the clear guide. The primary purpose of the guide is to allow the sled to track along the fence rather than the miter slot. Includes step-by-step, fully illustrated instructions.

I am in the process of making new kitchen cabinet doors, so this kind of tool sure makes easy and safe work of coping the rail ends.Shipped quickly, was packaged well and great instructions. Putting it together was simple enough and I did not run into any problems. All the necessary parts were there. Like all woodpeckers products, all the materials are top quality, no defects, no issues.Using it was easy, lock in the rail and a backer scrap to help eliminate blow out, tighten down the work piece and rout. Coped 30 some rails without any issue. After using it a bit, I noticed a few things. For one, I wish it had something like toggle clamps to hold down the work piece. The screw down clamps work fine, they just take longer, to screw and unscrew each time. Also when you screw down one clamp, the other side gets lose, so you have to go back and forth, little more time to do the work. Guessing there is flex in the piece that holds the screw down clamps. Also, really wish there was another clamp for the backer scrap, that would be so useful. There is no way to clamp the backer down. Sure you can lock it in somewhat with the sliding piece up front, but it's not tight enough. I often had to hold the back in place as I routed. While this is a great product, good price and works very well, if you plan on doing alot of coping, plan on spending time clamping the work down. That or spend a little more for other coping sleds that have toggle type clamps, will save you some time. Not a bad sled, I don't regret my purchase, just could be a little better.

Ok-let me say a bit about my skill level: I started in life as a professional carpenter, having served a 4 year apprenticeship. I left the trade around 1990 and I remain an advanced furniture builder (hobbyist!). I've been around shapers and router tables for nearly 40 years and know enough that safety must be practiced, or else you'll be known as "9 finger" (or less!).I've used a Delta coping sled for years (still have it), on my shaper. It is cast iron, not convenient to set up and gauges itself from the miter gauge slot. I have cabinet doors to make and am not interested in using the heavy Delta unit on my Kreg router table, hence my purchase of the Woodpecker sled for routing.Assembly was straight forward and accurate, as all holes were drilled precisely and all fasteners were present, well marked and well made. It took maybe 15 minutes to assemble the sled (I took my time). After assembly, just looking at it, it becomes very clear how to use the unit, though some less familiar with tools would be wise to fully read the instruction sheets. For doing end grain, on typical width rails/stiles, there is ample room to include a sacrificial backing piece, to prevent blowout. The sled (which I also refer to as the unit, in case you haven't figured that out), has a clear, plastic piece that registers against the router table fence, and also does a fine job of keeping your fingers away from the router bit. You do have to make sure the router fence is aligned for depth of cut, but you need to do this anyways, and is not a controlled by the Woodpecker sled.As I said it is very straight forward to assemble, to use and the results are excellent! Do I have anything negative to say? Not at the moment, and after using the sled for a few weeks, if I find a negative, I will add to the review, as well as contacting Woodpecker.I bought this tool in 2016, and used it semi-frequently through the past 6 years. I’ve noticed Woodpecker has a new model out, and a feature described on the blurb, will easily work with the original: use the clear top, as a guide against the router fence, after aligning on the router bit bearing. Works like a champ!I remain at five stars, and if looking for a coping sled this one or the newest model, will do the trick.

I just LOVE tools. The only thing I love as much as tools is buying tools. Actually, it might be the other way around. As a hobbyist I've made two sleds. When starting out I didn't really know what I needed, so I guessed. After a while I noticed some shortcomings and v2 was built. I should also mention that I own a Delta coping sled that's HEAVY and "real", but never really liked it. There were numerous times that it simply couldn't be used because of the situation and it only works in the T track. So I never end up using that thing. When I stumbled across this sled and jumped all over it and love it!Woodpeckers tools are always of great quality, innovation and is well thought out. Anodized CNC aluminum and high density plastics look, feel and work great. Assembly is enjoyable and the machining of the countersunk holes is flawless. This is exactly the quality you expect from a US made product. There are many points that could be made about this setup, but I'm only going to call out two here. The most important function of a coping sled is to positively hold your work piece. That's been one thing that I've struggled with on my designs. And hold down clamps aren't cheap. This sled has the two hold downs (plus the two handles that lock), as well as the innovative full length support of the sliding plate to the side of the work piece. That's pretty innovative IMO.Look for videos on youtube that show the sled in action and you'll see how practical it is and why it's worth spending the money over making one yourself.
