The quality of the steel isn't great, 1 blade came with scratches and dents which can mean the steel is weak. 3 of the 6 handles are loose and the blade moves so I won't using them until I find a solution because it's a high security risk so in the end I can say that only 2 are usable. Not worth it.

This is a strange selection of tools in a set presumably targeted at beginners. It has an oval skew, which is harder to sharpen than a standard skew and not a great choice for a new turner. The "spindle roughing gouge" is more like a continental spindle gouge. The regular spindle gouge has a very poor grind (though I regrind my tools anyway), and the "bowl gouge" is just a larger spindle gouge with a shallow flute, not a true deep-fluted bowl gouge. Of course, spindle gouges (excluding the SRG) are fine to use on a bowl, just watch Richard Raffan, but the "bowl gouge" in this kit is sure to frustrate a beginner trying to replicate popular grinds which simply won't work on a shallow-fluted gouge. The steel isn't particularly well finished, but it takes a sharp edge. I was able to get a nice surface on a spindle using the so-called roughing gouge and the skew. Sharpening was a bit of a challenge because the steel is notably softer than more common high speed steels like M2, and my CBN sharpening wheels removed the 4341 steel very quickly. This steel produced a lot more sparks than other high speed steels, as shown in one of the pictures.Given the price, it's hard to recommend this set. A set of Benjamin's Best lathe tools won't set you back much more, and includes a more usable selection, more tools, better steel, and better fit and finish.

These came with a nice wooden storage box which sadly will not be used; I like to put my gouges in a wall rack for easy access. As for the choice of gouges and scrapers, it is a nicely varied array. All of them with a well-turned Ash handle that feels good in the hand. Now these chisels have been shaped to the most typical profiles but they are not lathe-ready. A finer sharpening is necessary. As for the profiles, those are personal preferences in most cases, especially the gouges. So no comment is appropriate as it would be based on my preference. However, one thing I noted is that the 1/2" bowl gouge's flute is not as deep as I expect a bowl gouge to be. The 3/8" spindle gouge's steel has the right shape and I actually like the profile. I really like that the parting tool is diamond shaped; that makes for a easier cut-off. The Oval skew is great for added control but it is also harder to work with as you now have a rocking tool in your hands...The 3/4" round nose scraper is OK, but it's profile is way too aggressive at 70 degrees (see photo).; I'd back that off or maybe convert it to a negative rake scraper. The second chisel that met my satisfaction was the 1" roughing gouge; it is all I would have expected. But really, these are all solid chisels.I don't know the exact properties of the 4341 HSS these are made from but the refine sharpening took an edge real well and I didn't blue the metal. I have a tendency to sharpen often when turning so, longevity of the edge is not an issue for me, so I can't comment on that. I did put them on the lathe just to test their feel and cut without issue, except the skew, but that is the turner's issue not the skew's...Having been exposed to real quality chisels, with their associated pricing, I'd consider these mid-level and an affordable great choice for beginners who are just starting out.
