Customer Feedback

  • You need to sharpen the iron, and it takes a minute or so of trial and error to set the depth, but after that it worked great. The wood it’s made of feels solid, there is a space for the shavings to go, the bottom is perfectly flat and the wedge keeps the iron correctly in place.
  • Only downside is that the iron is a tad wider than the plane, So please be careful when using.

Need a rabbet plane? This one will do the job. The iron will need sharpening, honing and adjusting depending on whether you want to cut on the right or left side. The iron is slightly narrower than the body, so it cannot be set to cut on both sides without readjustment in between switching sides. The "rosewood" body may or may not be rosewood, but it is very hard and looks like the corners will hold up to significant use. I planed the base off at a slope of 1:6, then ground and honed the iron to match. This gives me a plane that will cut sliding dovetails on both sides of the male portion of the dovetail. It could also be used for the creation of hollows and rounds up to approximately no. 12. RECOMMEND.

The pin/wedge to hold to blade in was missing…was looking forward to using this tool, but without this piece, this tool was useless.

This worked as expected. Needed sharpening and some experimentation to get it to work appropriately. However I was able to get it to make decent lap joints. I would recommend this to mess around with in the wood shop but not for critical tasks where precision is necessary. Great value for the money

The wedge is a tad on the small side. You have to really drive it in to lock the cutter in place and this tends to always force the cutter to far out. Kinda fickle. The other problem I had is that the cutter itself wasn’t quite right. I had to file the wide cutter part down on the shoulders so the cutter can actually go far enough up into the body for a sufficiently light cut. As it was even razor sharp it was an obscenely deep cut. After filing the cutter and flattening to sole (which admittedly was pretty darn flat but I always do it), and setting the proper depth this plane works okay. I might go back and try and flatten the bed at some point as the shaving do tend to get packed behind the cutter. But it does it’s job. Is it a 80 year old masterpiece that will still be cutting rabbets a hundred years from now? No… it’s not. But is it a cheap $25 plane that will cut some rabbets and trim some tenons if you’re a beginner and tight on cash? Yes, yes it will.

Blade exceptionally dull, poorly ground. The foot was reasonably flat, but the bed the blade sits on is not flat good grip. Not worth the value for a beginner. Only value is teaching what to do in tuneup, ensuring you buy sharpenning jigs, etc

Bought this, in fact bought three, they were cheaper then. The soles are very flat and the blades sharpen up quickly. Put fences and depth s tops at different widths and depths, (no return allowed for me) and they cut pretty darn well. Trying to cut without the fences is not going to work, I found. But with the fence, they do.
