Didn't realize the measurements were side-to-side. There was a lip that was included in the measurement, making the useful area smaller than the side-side area.

These have worked quite well for me. I've been able to start many small plants in my windows during early spring. My only complaint is I wish the outer lip wasn't so large. I think I could use a dremel tool to fix that though if I were really ambitious. On the up side the lip is great for lifting and carrying the saucers
