The poppets are made of plastic. A metal screw, screws into the plastic. This is a recipe for failure. Surely Zurn knows this and therefore I believe it is a designed failure. When I opened up my check 1 valve I found the screw had been stripped. As you can see in the pictures the plastic was still in the threads of the screw. If this company is producing flawed products like this who knows what other designed flaws they are putting in their products. My recommendation is to avoid Zurn products for life.

I used this kit to replace the screw-in valve seats on the 975XLV (which is discontinued). The kit works well. One thing I noticed in the replacement kit, was two identical springs (my original has two different springs, one is a “heavier” spring with more tension vs the other). So I just reused my original springs.

First time repairing the outdoor backflow preventer connected to my sprinkler line. When I opened up the second valve I was able to see why my unit was slowly leaking and for which I was left a notice recently from the person who came by to test the unit. The second valve was chipped. The replacement kit worked out well. The most difficult part was getting the old black rings unscrewed from the unit and installing the new once. All in all, it took about 30 minutes and part of that time was trying to determine what makeshift tool I could use to remove the aforementioned rings. I was able to use the closed end of the a wrench I had on hand, I believe is was a size 21 wrench. The plastic rings that were removed have small notches on them so I was able to slide the wrench through between the notches and then carefully apply pressure against the notches to get the pieces unscrewed and used the same method to install the new rings, everything else was a breeze. Zurn Wilkins should include a tool to remove those pieces with this kit. Installing this kit saved quite a bit of money and hopefully will last at least another 10-15 years with sufficient maintenance/winterizing.
