The MOLYLY Butyl Joist Tape is a solid choice for deck protection and waterproofing. It sticks very well to wood, metal, and other materials, making it versatile for different outdoor projects beyond just deck joists. The material feels durable and provides a reliable moisture barrier, which can help extend the life of wooden structures. It’s easy to apply and cut, and the adhesive strength holds up well in different weather conditions.Overall, a reliable product for sealing and protecting deck joists and similar applications.

The tape was easy to install on the small deck I built for doing yoga. Only time will tell how well it protects the wood but it went on easily, covered the tops of the joists completely and had great adhesion.

Really good joist tape. The adhesive is good and sticky. Peeling the backing is pretty easy and does not rip or tear away from the roll. The top of the tape is nice and smooth. Overall, really good joist tape for a pretty good price too.

While replacing the deck boards on our front porch, I decided to add joist tape to the tops of all the joists as well as as a barrier between the joist hangers and a few pressure-treated joists I had to replace (previous ones weren't pressure treated). I had done a similar treatment when I built our back deck 9 years ago, and the framing all still looks brand new. Because I have the Vine program, I tried a number of different brands, and this came out on top by far. It's a bit wider than the others, so you can wrap over the edges of the boards just a bit--and it stayed stuck down, even in direct sunlight (many others lifted up at the edges). The most important part to me was that the backing removed easily from the tape. Some of the others were very hard to start, and then shredded or ripped lengthwise as I removed the backing--this ripped once or twice in 2 rolls, which isn't bad. I also ended up using the backing to help my smooth down the tape without splinters. One other thing I liked with this is that the surface of the tape is smooth, but not slippery. I try not to walk on the newly taped joists until they have boards screwed down, but sometimes you can't help it. Some of the other tapes were pretty slippery, but this felt secure to step on--a bonus if you're working on a high deck. The only note of caution with this tape is that it's pretty stretchy once the backing is removed. That meant I needed sharp scissors, not the usual shop hand-me-down scissors I tend to use. Luckily, there was very little residue to clean off of the scissors afterward. I also had to be careful not to overstretch it as I applied it just to make sure it didn't shrink back down before I got the boards screwed down on top of it.Would definitely buy again if I ever expand the deck.

The joist tape is great product and IMO a must use product. The MOLYLY tape sticks even to old joist that are still good to use. The reason for 4 stars is the tape under the wrapper is very tacky and it unrolls from the center because it lacks a center to hold it together. Otherwise it is a good tape despite what I wrote. In picture #3 you can see a joist that did not use Joist tape and the moister travel through (along) the nail and rotted out the joist whereas the joist tape seal out any moister that would get through. I'm going to be rebuilding our deck this summer, in part because a lot of the deck joists have rotted out to the point where they can't be salvaged and will become unsafe in the not too distant future. Unfortunately the prior homeowners cheaped out and used untreated wood, which certainly contributed to the joists early demise. But another tip that I've learned from building prior decks is to put tape like this on the tops of all the joists to help protect the joists from the water and weather. Butyl tape like this is so sticky that it will seal around the fasteners you use to fasten the deck boards to the joists. If the prior owners had used tape like this, I probably wouldn't have to replace my deck. It's such cheap insurance, I don't understand why everyone doesn't do this.So why this deck tape? I like that it's a full 2" wide, which means that it will cover the top of a 1.5" thick joist and have a little bit to wrap down the sides to help shed water. I also like that the top of the tape is a matte black, so you won't really be able to see it between the deck boards.
