When our water heater went out the code was for a low thermopile voltage. We ordered this replacement part, which looked correct, but we weren't sure. I have an AO Smith 50 gallon gas water heater, model number GCV 50 300. I wanted to attempt to repair it myself, but was uncertain whether I could safely complete the repair, or whether this part would fit.Short version--the part fits, but the water heater still doesn't work--awaiting further diagnosis from a plumber.Longer version--there are excellent videos on installation that walk you through step by step. I performed the procedure at least 3-4 times as I tried cleaning the old thermopile, installing the new one, reinstalling the old, cleaning the combustion chamber, etc etc. The first time through, I was very slow and methodical, but if the video matches your design, it's not particularly difficult. You need a crescent wrench or a couple of correctly fitting box wrenches, a hex head screwdriver or drill bit, flathead screwdriver, and needle nose pliers. My biggest concern was gas safety, but be scrupulous to turn it off before all work, and do frequent sniff checks for the rotten egg gas odor.I was able to install this correctly, and though it didn't work, I believe that's due to some other underlying problem, and the part itself looks well made and fit properly. It also had a very good set of directions, but in this case I needed the visual step by step for the video. The hardest part to remove and reattach is the little split metal manifold block in the door assembly. Have some patience, and watch a video for tips.
