I didn't get to use the chisel, so I can't say how it might have worked. The thing that gets me, is that the handle had a very large crack that ran about half it's length. This was not a hairline crack. It was very noticeable. So how did it make it through quality control, if any.

Seems like a good tool. It's the only reasonably priced chisel I could find in this width that I needed for a particular mortise, so it did the job I bought it for and joins the collection.

While I have never purchased or used a Crown chisel before this one, I can say with confidence, I will not be buying any more. I thought the Crown name carried an implied level of quality (upper middle of the road). While these are certainly not Lie Nielsen, Two Cherries or similar, I expected more that what I got. Out of the box, I noticed the chisel looked "off". Upon further inspection the chisel I received appears to have had the hole in the handle bored crooked or the shaft/tang of the chisel mounted crooked. Either way, the handle and the blade of the chisel are out of alignment. Rather than boxing it back up and returning it right then (which I should have), I wanted to give it a try. I don't have any experience hand cutting mortises so was practicing on some scrap maple I had laying around. I know maple isn't the softest wood out there but after less than 2 minutes of work on a mortice I had already removed the bulk of the waste with a drill press, the edge of the blade chipped out on me. Sorry, maybe Crown makes great chisels and I just got a bad one. At any rate this will certainly be my last.
