First, the gouges come poorly sharpened - you can see the grinding marks where they used something like 60 or 80 grit on the edge.Second, even after I laboriously sharpened the blades, honed them to a mirror finish .. they don't cut. They smash the wood fibers instead of cutting them.

They're fine for what you pay. Just be aware, if you don't know how to sharpen curved chisels, you will NOT get out of it what you're likely hoping for. They're perfectly acceptable quality, but need a knowing hand to bring out the best of them.

It’s very handy when you don’t exactly know what size of it you need since it comes in a variety sizes. I got right ones. Thanks.

The price was good, so I tried them. But they are very roughly sharpened and even after carefully sharpening them myself they are still not cutting very well. I will keep them and try again but I guess I get what I pay for. I have since purchased a higher quality set.

These in-cannel gouges are a great buy. They hold an edge reasonably well, stand up to use with a mallet, and come from the manufacturer with a satisfactory bevel grind. The handle may be a little bit short for a broad hand, but this is not a major problem. They are not tiring to use. Compared with much more expensive gouges, these work quite well, and are a great value for the price.

I have used them several times to make a groove in wood.

not the best made and as all made in china, but for carpenters who know these are the only ones I found that are sharpened the right way for the job of allowing internal cuts like door hinges. As I see previous comments, yes the metal is so bad, but as I only need them for a few cuts per job should last a while.

First of all, the bevel isn't on the wrong side, as others have stated. These are In-cannel gouges; the bevel is supposed to be on the inside. It's actually in the product description, though they phrased it "inner edge" (always read the product description, kids). The in-cannel is intended for paring an inside, or concave curve. Some call them "pattern maker" gouges, but they were neither designed nor intended specifically for that trade, but rather as a joinery tool. They are not designed for turning and would likely be unsafe to use with a lathe. Now, as to quality, these are cheaply made and they feel cheap. The Harbor freight price point should have left no surprises, so I'm amused to see how astonished and angry many people are in the reviews about the quality. You get what you pay...oh, never mind. Look, a single, premium quality, 3/4" in-cannel gouge starts around $60. This is a set of 4 for $20. What could you possibly expect? That said, they aren't horrible. They will take a great deal of work to tune, and won't stay sharp for long, especially on harder woods, but they will do what they were designed for. I had to square the edges and spend a great deal of time grinding and polishing the bevel and the back, but was able to get them to cut reasonably well. They will do until I've built up a small collection of better quality gouges.I wouldn't recommend these for serious woodworkers (I don't expect serious woodworkers would be shopping bargain basement priced tools on Amazon anyway), but new or weekend woodworkers will probably be happy with them, as long as they're don't mind putting in the work to tune them and don't expect premium performance. Understand what you're in for before giving them a shot. Win or lose, You're out $20.

Received these and it was just all a mess.A) they weren't sharp even a littleB) the bevel on the cutting edge was crazy crookedC) extremely soft metal not hardened or tempered at all, ran a file across and it dug right in there. The same day i received these i threw em away and bought a better one.

Good for the money. They are sharpened correctly, contrary to a different review.

Just received this chisel set, and am very pleased with the quality. I'd read reviews saying they came dull, and sharpened on the wrong side, etc. Mine came sharp, sharpened just the way I wanted them, and appear to be of very good quality. Now as a caveat, I only paid about $20 for them, understand they were made in China and that they're made of relatively soft carbon steel, so they probably won't hold an edge like higher grade steel. And they're rust if I let them. But... I think they're a great value for my purpose, and am very happy with them.
