I'm a retired AV installer that carried a similar pair of devices with me to installations around the country. These are valuable for sorting out low voltage wiring and still doing some pro bono installation work, I missed having the one that I left behind with my company when I retired. It was at least 30 years old and worked perfectly.So here are some gripes about this system:The probe is more sensitive to hum fields and crackles for no apparent reason when activated. It is also microphonic, being sensitive to touch and the unit can actually go into feedback because of that. Having the volume knob is helpful but I found the unit only usable in the lower range of setting.The tone generator is quite good and the 2-tone warble makes it easy to identify. There was no instruction manual with the generator and there are some features that aren't instinctive that deserve some explanation. "Tone" and "Continuity" are fairly obvious but I was unsure about the two "Polarity" modes (one with the unit in off condition and the other part of the continuity mode). Also, there is an internal switch (exposed through a small hole in the housing) with only schematic style resistors showing for the two modes, one with 2 and the other with 4 "resistors", all in series.Bottom line is that I will get some use out of this but wish I had my old friend instead. BTW, it only had the tone and continuity modes.
