These carving blocks worked perfectly for me to experiment with carving. The basswood is very smooth with no knots/splintering, so it's very easy to carve. For the quality and variety, these are set at a great price. Great for beginners or small projects.

Unfortunately, I’ve ordered basswood bundles before, and they came with some ridiculously small cuts that were about useless. This set comes with only two generous sizes that could be used to comfortably carve animals, figures, cars, etc.All of the pieces in my set are straight, tight grained and relatively knot free. Granted, that’s a characteristic of basswood, but I’ve definitely had some rejects from other suppliers.Basswood is easy carving for both beginners and pros alike, and this offering does not disappoint.

I got this to test out some carving knives. I learned how to carve when I was a young adult and just picked up soon carving knives. I needed some practice wood I knew was easy to work with and ordered this to practice on. It serves the purpose. The carving set I got is unfortunately about as quality as I expected but still will try and make some simple projects from this wood set. Right now I am working on a spoon. This wood set has no knots in it, removes easily but isn’t super soft either. All the traits that make basswood a create beginning wood to work with.

Some of the wood is too tough to carve with a knife or other hand tools. Specifically, the 2 inch blocks gave me a lot of trouble. I was able to remove the corners from the block using a 1” chisel but when I went to my flex cut roughing knife, I was only able to get measly shavings.I’m not the best carver but I have had my fair share of not so great wood, this is unfortunately one of those batches. I think it’s because the grain is too dense. Lighter basswood is much easier to carve.By contrast I was able to get a face started on the 1” block. I think it is a slightly lighter density than the 2” blocks. This block is able to easily carry detail.I really wanted to get a good batch of wood from amazon but it seems I’ll still need to shop from other sources.

Nice set of basswood pieces. These are perfect for woodcarving. You can make an almost unlimited number of items with these. Just break out the carving tools and start creating.

We give these to our boys to keep their hands active- carving.Basswood is the easiest to start carving with and has a pretty fine grain and you don't have to deal with knots.These are smaller pieces with a couple of larger ones, too. Good variety.As advertised. Will purchase again. Recommended.
