I am currently trying to track down the “runs fine for 15 minutes, then shuts down” issue with my trusty lawn tractor. I found the tester easy to use. No clue how I would use on a lawn mower with a crank start. Two people would be necessary for it to be used on a car.

I got this tester to test coil output and High Voltage wire integrity. It does do that BUT I have some reservations about the ease of use. First I tried it on my chain saw to see how well the coil was producing output. The size of the unit and tail wire didn’t lend itself to being an easy hook up. I pulled the starter cord several times and found it hard to hold everything together without it disconnecting. I also noticed that the light emitted was very weak. I then connected the output to plug wire directly to ground bypassing the plug all together and finally got a decent illumination to see everything was working ok.Next, I went to my push lawn mower. I had the same problems with the hook up staying connected. Then I also ran into the problem of being able to observe the bulb when pulling the starter cord because the plug was located in front of the engine and the pull cord was in the back of the engine. It posed a real coordination problem.Next, car engines. Here it works a lot easier and mainly because the plug wires from the engine allow a lot of slack to insert the tester in line with the plug. However, you will also need an auxiliary starter switch to turn the engine over while observing the light. In all, it does what it should but the connectors could be improved somewhat to hold their attachment better.
