Very happy with this unit. Assembled all my surplus Sata drives into it and we now have 3.5 TB of storage. The RAID hardware can configure several ways.

I had a Western Digital NAS drive that was no longer supported. Removed the drives from the NAS and re-formatted them. Slid them to the Cenmate 4, and it was then simply plug and play. One thing to note, it is essentially a USB drive, so it needs to be 'ejected' to close it down correctly, before the computer is turned off. It is currently working a treat, and shows up as 1,2,3 or 4 separate internal hard drives in Windows explorer.

The unit arrived and was set up within a only a bit of trouble. My drives fit in without the modifications listed on this Amazon page. It took some patience to fit the first drive. Once it was in, the drive was very secure. I suggest you work with the tray without modification to keep the toolless operation. Screws and a driver are included if needed.Once I got it running and visible on my computer I plugged it into the ESATA port on my NAS and it was immediately recognized. This gives me an additional 12TB of space. I am using reconditioned server drives, so redundancy is required. The main problems is the poor manual. It is very small making it hard to read the tiny font and diagrams. Take a photo of the page and read it on your phone. The instructions are insufficient for proper set up. The QR code on the back is labeled "software" but no software is required. Instead the QR code leads to instructions to complete the RAID setup. All that is required is a simple reset procedure but you have to know to do that.Once I did the reset, the device worked just fine.Contrary to the promotions on this Amazon page, is far too noisy to leave in an occupied room. The two inch fan is very loud. Fortunately I have a isolated server space where my NAS is located.Even though it is an attractive price, it far too loud to be not suitable for apartment use. DO NOT buy this for use in your family room for video streaming.

Very impressed with this rig. Has 4 slots which can be used and used in anyway you like with the RAID enclosure just follow the simple steps and you will could unlock a while different world and use a variation which suits you best.72tb! Is an insane limit which I by no means will be able to fill for quite some time, having that there is definitely give me peace of mind knowing I can expand my storage at anytime and very easily at that. The enclosure is very sturdy and made up of aluminium alongside the fan allowing for optimum efficiency when running the drives and the non slip feet are great and help keep it sturdy.Overall very happy and would recommend

This review is for the raid-enabled version of the 4-bay enclosure.Installing 4 8TB WD blue drives went smoothly. The drives took a little bit of convincing to snap into the trays on one side, but they will fit just fine without any modifications.Bonus that full 3.5" hard drives are toolless, so that was a breeze.I used only the non-raid mode, and all four drives appeared over the Esata link to my PC (Esata cable included). Unfortunately, I can't speak to how well the raid modes work.I moved a large file to one of the drives and observed a sequential write speed of around 160MB/s. The same drive connected internally clocked 190MB/s. for many use cases this won't matter.I also had this connected to a PCI Esata card, so that could have been at play as well.I decided this enclosure wasn't for me due to the level of noise that comes from the fan. I wouldn't call it loud, but this was going in my living room and I am super picky about having it silent while watching movies. if I can hear it at all from 10 ft away, it's a no-go for me. My PC is way overbuilt for absolute silence, and I just can't expect that from, likely any external drive enclosure. If it were a bit quiter It might have worked for me.I'm not even knocking off a star because it is actually is a good value for a DAS and is fairly quiet, just not quiet enough for my use case.

This is ok if you want a good amount of storage space but without a network connection. I grabbed this to review as I needed a storage solution for lots of photos and videos. It works well with four the 4TB drives I have but I will be upgrading soon. It is nice and fast connected to USB3 and data transfer seems pretty solid. I have managed to connect it to my router via the USB port and I can access it from there but the speed drops considerably. It's not a bad price for what it does but I now know I would prefer a NAS drive over this. The Raid function works well and swapping drives in and out isn't a problem. It comes supplied with the power supply, USB lead and an E-sata Lead. The dipswitches on the back change the raid mode and instructions are included with the unit.

They say one thing on paper..... But please, here are the instructions now.1) make sure usb is connected to something2) power off3) set dip switches to normal mode4) HOLD reset button BEFORE you flick the ON switch (10 second hold)5) now you can set dips to whatever RAID and repeat steps 1 to 4Is that so hard to document?

It is a pretty good DAS for the price you pay. Especially if it is to reuse a couple of old drives. The setup could have been explained a little easier since the manual could not have been smaller. You can go and download it to make it easier to read but the images are at a super low resolution and the webpage is very slow. The good news is you don’t really need the software. Booting it up when holding the reset will result in the raid configuration and the computer will see it. I use it on win 10, win 11, and Debian. I am sure it will work on other flavors of Linux. The hardware install is a bit strange. Some drives are tighter than others even when they are the same. I have not looked into how it is using but it also reduces 8Tb to 5.5Tb on raid 5. It seems a bit much but since it is from old drives it is extra.Overall it is a nice way to have some extra space for a very low price.

Super easy to mount drives! No hardware needed! At first I couldn’t figure out how to get the enclosure to switch to RAID mode (I’m using RAID5) but once I read the online instruction manual (the included instruction manual is very small and I couldn’t read it very well), and noticed the fact that the reset button needs to be depressed WHILE THE UNIT IS BEING POWERED UP, it worked perfectly!Meanwhile, I had sent an email to their support dept. and they got back to me with the same advice within about 12 hours. Pretty great, especially considering the great price!

I love this DAS! It was super easy to set up. The software needed to use the RAID looks a little dated but works fantastically. It took only a few minutes to install all four drives, download the software, and get it running. The software was very easy to figure out. If you’re looking for an affordable option that just works and works well, you should definitely consider picking this one up.
